Creating a natural Scenic Terrain Base

Creating a scenic terrain base is a rather simple project . The methods used vary , from modelling a structure over a solid hardwood base , on a foam core base or on a contoured frame made from cardboard , foam core , wood or wire mesh . I've always used whatever happened to be on hand at the time . Your framework or base structure can be sculpey , papier mache , wadded up newspaper or even rocks or bricks lying around the old homestead ; it really doesn't matter as long as it works for your particular needs .

This particular scenic terrain diorama base is built over a contoured wooden box , covered in wire mesh that has then been covered in rigid wrap ( a plaster infused gauze bandage ) . The rock outcroppings are sculpted in Sculpey .

Applying an Underpainting

The underpainting is nothing more than an application of color washes . You can have a lot of fun at this stage , it doesn't have to be precise because all you are doing is staining the plaster and or sculpey with a base coat of color . I have found that the looser I work at this stage the better the end result is , having a very natural look . On earlier pieces where I actually tried to be very precise and controlled in the application of paint my finished pieces tended to look painted and that's not what you really want to achieve .

Mix your colors and vary the wash

The one thing you don't want to do is use premixed colors for your stain . Nothing makes grass look more artificial than a green straight from the bottle . I tend to use the primary colors and mix my colors on the fly , that way each layer of wash is different and I can build up a great variety of greens and earth tones in my underpainting . Feel encouraged to scrub and add heavier applications in various areas , you don't want a flat uniform covering .
It's OK to Be Messy!

Unless you are striving to reproduce a suburban manicured lawn , when you are putting on your applications of earth and turf it's okay to be very freehanded . Nature tends to be wild and so should your terra-forming . Sprinkle your earth and turf haphazardly and randomly , let the various applications overrun each other and mix . Woodland Scenics makes a great Scenic Cement that is basically a thinned down white glue that dries transparent . It can be splattered on , sprayed on , brushed on and each type of application technique renders differing results , feel free to experiment .

Remember : You DON'T Have to Cover Everything !
Don't be afraid to let some of your plaster hardshell show through or some of your acrylic stains to be transparent rather than opaque , this helps make your terrain appear natural rather than painted . It also helps add even more variety in the textures and colors of your ground cover .

Adding Real Plants

Certain dried plants work very nicely as scenic terrain details . Check your local craft store for appropriately scaled plants .

Scenic Elements . . . trees , shrubs and hedgerows

The addition of larger plants and trees , whether utilizing some of the available plastic or cast metal diorama elements or merely using clumps of foam will further the illusion of a landscape as well as adding some dramatic focal points . Depending on the scale of the models or vehicles you incorporate in your scenic terrain , these can serve as bushes , shrubs or even trees and forests .

Useful for Any Scale

A basic terrain build can serve as a base for practically any scale you might want to use . Until you begin to add very specific details , be they buildings , vehicles or larger trees , the options for scale are fairly open . These anime figures are 1/12 scale .
