Finishing Up The Saddle Skirts

Before I could take the saddle to the finishing stages , I had to finish up the skirting and the stirrup panels . Part of this was to attach the two skirts and attach the buckle covers and buckle keepers . This was done quite simply by gluing the various straps and covers with handy ol' Sobo Glue .

I also needed to dye the leather , and with no actual leather dye , I substituted Rotring Liquid Acylic color , brown if you were actually wondering . Once the paint had been applied , I buffed the surface to seal the pores of the leather and shine it up with a run of the mill shoe buffing cloth .

The stirrup straps and girth have been left their neutral buff color to add some variety to the color scheme of the saddle .

Putting Everything Together For An Overall Check

Once I had colored the saddle skirts , for visibility I swapped out my brown horse for a roan , and I found that as far as the color scheme was progressing , I liked the red much better ; I prefer monochromatic color schemes you may recall .
Coloring The Trim and Adding The Strap Buffers

To color the trim of the saddle skirts I have called into service an old accenting medium , Rub 'n' Buff , a wax based pigment . Rubb "n" Buff is very nice as far as ease of application and giving a piece a nice antiqued finish .

The wood stirrup strap buffers have been carved from bass wood , stained with watercolors and then glued onto the top saddle skirt .

I had considered adding more decoration to this saddle set , but decided against it for the mere fact that I have envisioned this more as a rather straightforward utilitarian saddle owned by a ronin moreso than a higher ranking samurai .
A Look At The Details

Varying your colors and media really add so much to a scratchbuild project . The colors of dyed leather and natural buff in combination with the gold trim and wood add a nice quality of depth and contrast to the saddle . I will also be adding some additional brass elements for breast collar and crupper ties to the skirting , which will further enhance the end result .
