A step by step featurette for creating a 1:6 scale set of saddle and tack for a samurai horse .

During the Momoyama Period , the latter half of the 16th century and beginning of the 17th century , no armor was made for the horse . The mount of the samurai would be decked out gaily in long braided tassels , fitted with a lacquered wood saddle and strangely shaped stirrups , often made of iron . Typically seen with large ornamental saddle cloths decorated with mon and at times made of animal fur , the samurai horse during this period , decorated and outfitted more for show than for battle . There are examples of chanfrons , made of paper and leather , a few of steel , typically representing fantastic monsters , rarely of any protective value . In feudal Japan , the horse was more a means of transportation and beast of burden than actual combat vehicle , serving more as a way of visual intimidation when ridden to battle .
The Japanese Saddle Tree

Constructed of 4 pieces of wooded , laced together , the japanese saddle tree is similar in design to US Army saddles . Sometimes inlaid with metal , some merely simple wooden construction , most trees were lacquered wood . The saddle tree itself forms the primary base of the saddle , strapped onto the skirt and with a simple cloth cushion attached to it .

Traditional Sources for Inspiration

Oriental saddle dressage allows a great deal of interpretation and creativity , and there are some excellent examples of samurai saddle and tack in the form of period prints of mounted samurai as well as decorative dolls . The style also allows some wonderful potential use of fabrics , fringes and trims as well .
Key Parts of the Japanese Saddle

The Japanese saddle really is a beautiful combination of both form and function , for not just it's simplicity but for it's intricate design aspects as well . This sample displays how the stirrup panels are attached to the saddle , as well as how the stirrups pass thru the saddle tree . The large decorated hide and fringed cloth at the rear of the saddle is the crupper cover .
The Stirrup Panel

A distinctive portion of the japanese saddle is the stirrup panel , a large leather pad that protected the horse's sides from chafing from the large iron stirrups . The panel was tied to the saddle tree with cords , and this feature can give you the option of adding more decorative lacing as well as decorative knot tying . Those with leather working skills can even utilize this panel to add stamped designs and patterns , or the panel can be painted with intricate designs , mon or simply left plain .
The Bridle , Bit and Harness

There is great variety in japanese bridles , with nose bands as well as those without , and most had two sets of reins , one functional and a secondary non-functional set , used most likely as a lead . Most harnesses consisted of a breast collar and a crupper , both serving the purpose of preventing the saddle from slipping either forward or backward .

Some samples have a decorated crupper cover that is attached to the saddle , covering the back of the horse .
