Original Artwork : The Lion Queen

In 1996 , SQ Productions released Jungle Tails , Volume One in their line of Gallery Girl Collection Art Books featuring the works of a variety of illustrators . While certainly not a " big name " I had a bit of a reputation for " Jungle Girls " and " Pin-Up Girls " and had been referred to within the comic industry as " the best kept secret in comics " . The artwork I did for SQ Productions is some of the last professional illustrative work I did prior to my retirement from the professional art field in 1999 , as well as being some of my finest and favorite pieces executed during my 20 year career as an illustrator . Sal asked me to provide three illustrations for this book , and " The Lion Queen " was my favorite , Sal really gave the artists free rein to do whatever they were inspired to do and this particular illustration was a prime example of my own individual take on not just " genre " artwork but illustration as a whole .

I have always preferred black and white illustration over any other medium and so I really pulled out all the stops when it came to my illustrations for the SQ Production Gallery Girl Collections .

The " Lion Queen " has been executed in graphite , which is an " artsy fartsy " term for a pencil drawing , on d'Arches Cold Press Watercolor paper , one of my favorite illustrative stocks for its archival quality and sheer excellence when it comes to handling of a variety of media . The stock is acid free and has been sealed with a professional fixatif to prevent smudging . The same has been done with the original pencil study that this illustration was based .

The original pencil study is also included within this auction and makes a perfect companion piece to the final illustration , displaying the working method I undertook when creating these illustrations . All the details and shading considerations were first worked out in the study , and then transferred to the final illustration via lightbox . The reason I redrew the illustration on a lightbox was to insure a perfect transfer without the indentation marring inherent in transferring the illustration through tracing the study onto the paper of the final illustration .

The dimensions of the pencil study are 11 inches by 14 inches and has been executed on acid free layout bond . The finished illustration measures 12 . 5 inches by 16 inches with a " live art area " of 11.5 inches by 14 inches , so you can mat and frame this without any loss to the finished illustration .
