Costuming

Playing Around In The Costume Department

I didn't know whether I wanted to go the sword and sorcery route or take the sci-fi trail for this headsculpt/custom figure , so I just started putting together bits and pieces and followed my impulses .

At this point she can go either way and I'm still undecided as to how her final incarnation will stand revealed . I'm trying really hard avoiding giving her a lightsabre . . . tho' it's really , really tempting to turn her into a Sith Witch .
The Costuming Conundrum

The very first element of her costuming was the choice to utilize Cool Girl Shadow's chainmail catsuit . I have lots of red pleather , so right from the get-go I knew that I would be creating various pieces from that , it was really just deciding what I should make . The armored sleeves was a natural choice , they're easy to do , and I wanted to play around with layering and stitching . My stitching is improving , but I still have one heck of a time making them straight . The bootsleeve was an accident , as it started out as a differently styled armored sleeve for her left arm , it was too big so I decided to try it on her leg . It worked better that way , go figure . Inspired by the costuming on Sideshow's Asaji Ventress , I then borrowed the skirt from Triad's Gothic Lolita 1.0 black version . I had already created a shoulder cop , and as I contemplated how I wanted to attach it chose to create a gorget-like collar that I could add studs , straps and buckles to . The addition of the cape was just a whim , it came from my Darth Vader figure and just because of the length of the tying straps I decided I'd pull it down and under her arms to tie it at the back , which I think gives it an interesting look .

I am awaiting the arrival of her wig , which is really going to alter the way she looks and will most definitely influence the remainder of her costuming . I do have the helmet from my MPC Darth Vader model kit sitting in the wings just in case . * chuckle *

Sith Happens . . .

to borrow a bad pun from Kanae over at the Men With Dolls forum after I admitted my inability to resist the temptation to turn to the Dark Side of the Force in the evolution of this custom .

The real clencher to making the decision to complete this figure as a dark Jedi Knight was the creation of her light sabre . I had removed the semi-circular shelving pieces from the My Scene Skechers Store playset , with the intention to use them to make a hand glaive , kinda like Xena's chakhram . As I was working out the design of a handle for it ( also known as rummaging thru the parts bin ) I came across the gun sight from the Cool Girl Maggie Hammer and inspiration struck .
Taking a 1:18 scale artillery shell from a BBi Elite Force weapons set and sticking it in one end of the gun sight added the right length to make the body of the sabre , it was then just a simple matter of filing down the end of the " blade " from my MPC Darth Vader model kit to create the signature weapon of a Jedi Knight .
Noh Theatre and Samurai movies

The seed for the creation of my Sith Witch was in my subconscious due to so many sources , not the least being some of the preliminary Sith designs from the first trilogy of Star Wars films " The Phantom Menace " . Both Delta Force Chung from Men With Dolls and CustomDawg from Triad Toys had commented on her resemblance to Asaji Ventress in her pre-hair point when I first began the headsculpt for this figure . I had planned from the first to give this headsculpt hair , it was just a matter of what style wig to give her . With the final choice to turn this gal into a warrior of the Dark Side , the wigging problem was actually quite simple .

Japanese Samurai culture played so fundamental a role in the basis of Lucas' Jedi Knight concept it was natural to follow a japanese influence in the wigging process .
Creating Sith Armor

A Kwikie Kostume for Kat
I've wanted to do some jodhpurs for a while , and having picked up some Soldier Story bods for some new customs and a Monique " Marianne " wig to give Kat for a retro styled look , thought she'd be the perfect candidate for a kind of " Bond " girl type custom . I 'm going to be adding about a 1/2 inch of brown leather to her boot tops for a two tone rider style boot and I might end up giving her some white puffy bell sleeves to the gothic lolita top for a swashbuckler type look . She has kind of a fencing instructor look to her at this point , so she might get a rapier as well .

I made her jodhpurs from a pair of old Dockers khakis that I had worn out . The top is Triad's Gothic Lolita with the sleeves removed . Her boots are Destiny's .

Adding Sleeves and Boot Trim
I was curious to see how this costume kwikie would look with sleeves ,
so I took the shirt from my Abe Lincoln Talking president and removed
the sleeves and did a fast placement test , which I think really finishes
the top off nicely . They will now be sewed on . Since this has very much
an English Hunt look to it , I decided to finish off the boots to resemble
some Denholm Rider boots( very much like those worn by Patrick
MacNee in an episode of " The Avengers " ) . She will very definitely be
getting a rapier , and I think also a riding crop .

The Lure of The Tropics
Revealed at last is the true nature of my " freckles " headsculpt , an expansion to my jungle girl themed customs . She's actually the first of a couple I have planned . In order to costume her appropriately I searched around and purchased three tropical/ safari themed costume sets , the first of which arrived today ( April 19th for those of you with a scorecard ) . This one is a Barbie Fashion Safari outfit set from 1988 , and actually is a whole lot better than I thought it would be .

I guess I'm on kind of a jodhpur kick lately , since this set was chosen specifically for the pants . However I have to add that I'm really pleased as punch about how nicely the blouse works on this gal , I didn't think I'd be using it at all , trading it out in favor for another top in one of the other costume sets I purchased . The colors however , along with the giraffe spotted pattern look so cool I think I will end up keeping this top on her .

I am thinking right now about adding a vest of some sort , and possible re-working the belt . I'm currently constructing some boots , whether or not they will be those given to " freckles " is the factor I'm not clear on yet . I may end up making riding style boots for her or possible picking up a set of Triad boots .

Decided to do a quick bootsleeve to see whether or not I wanted " freckles " to have a high boot or a short hiker style , and I've decided she'll get boots like the sleeve she's now test fitting . I'll be adding an back buckle to it just to make it interesting . Armed now with a Webley and sporting an " elephant " gun , she has at last jarred a name from me to christen her with . Since her conception I knew I wanted to give her a fine Irish name , ( a bit of a knod and a wink to " King Solomon's Mines " from 1937's version starring Paul Robeson and Cedric Hardwicke , and in particular Anna Lee's " Kathy O'brien as well as the character of Rhonda LeBeck from 1990's " Tremors " played by Finn Carter ) ; hence I am naming her Finn O'Malley . Hey , ya can't have a true Jungle theme without a spirited irishman ( or lady ) running around !

Different Costuming Ideas

Since it is my plan to create several " Great White Hunter " styled customs I purchased several different costuming sets , two of which have arrived . The first was Mattel's "Barbie Fashion Safari " my favorite so far for Finn ; and the second is Kenner's Safari Set for their " Dusty , Action Fashion Doll " from 1975 . The Dusty set has a more " traditional " styled safari suit replete with a pith helmet .

I am pretty much set towards using the jodhpurs from the Barbie set , and for this test , switched out the blouse for the shirt from the Dusty set , which looks nice , but considering the look of Finn ; I most likely will stick to my original idea of keeping the Barbie giraffe pattern top wth a vest .
Finishing Up Finn's Boots

I could very easily have stayed with a standard tall straight tall boot , but since I had some back buckle straps from the set of DiD german felt high top german winter boots , thought that by leaving the top 1/2 inch of the bootsleeves open I could use these to add a bit of " designer " style to the boots with the addition of the back straps . I'm using Cutey Honey's heels right now , but will likely get some Triad bootheels for my finished version on the boots .
A Custom Bush Hat

Unfortunately for me , my sewing skills have not yet matured enough to allow me to create a suitable hat for Finn , I decided to modify a stock hat after 5 failed attempts at hand sewing a bush hat for Finn . My good luck was having a black felt fedora that I got several years ago from Project A.R.E intended for Barbra Dark . Barb ended up getting a different hat so the fedora was delegated to the " parts bin " .

I pulled out the fedora for Finn , gave it a hot water dip so that I could reshape it , and then changed the color by airbrushing it . I cut a new hatband from leather , attached a buckle from Rio Rondo ( part of a saddle making set ) and now Finn has a suitable Bush Hat .
