 Dreams From The Idiot Box |
 Happiness is a warm TV set . . .
For good or ill , at the tender age of seven, my parents rewarded my brother and I not only with our own individual rooms , but with portable TV's as well . No more fighting over what shows to watch , no more need for shared family viewing experiences . We were truly free , a uniquely " american " style of freedom . The impact television had on my formative years can definitely be seen in my artwork and in my lifestyle . Certainly my take on comic art , most especially Femforce , was influenced by Bill Dozier's " BATMAN " .  With the advent of DVD's , I was overjoyed to begin a brand new section to my video collection , namely my favorite TV shows . I'm still waiting for " Melrose Place " , and I'm thankful to be able to replace my third generation VHS copies of shows that have made an indelible impression on me . Whether reliving childhood enthusiasms such as the " Planet of the Apes " series , " Dark Shadows " or that Gerry Anderson gem " UFO " or modern TV classics like " Twin Peaks " , " X-Files " or " Millennium " , today's technology offers more enjoyment from a medium few of us can even imagine being without .  Beer and Pretzels Tee Vee
Borrowing a colloquialism from my FRP days and my association with " Dragon Magazine " creator Tim Kask , " Beer and Pretzel " TV is the type of content that you don't take too seriously , aside from the fanatical devotion to the programming schedule . You can bet I ran from school in order to catch " Dark Shadows " , and " Combat " nite was accompanied by the ritual of popcorn . I often disobeyed the rules governing my bedtime in order to watch Chad Everet in his continuing melodrama at the " Medical Center " , and see just how unaffected by the Hawaiian winds Jack Lord's hair could be on " Hawaii Five o " . For whatever reason , I gravitated towards shows that were far from average , maybe it was puberty , but shows with girls in politically incorrect wardrobes fighting aliens , or heroic manly men fighting monsters , be they supernatural foes as in " The Night Stalker " or supermarionation from another Gerry Anderson masterpiece " Fireball XL-5 " , my viewing preferences tended to focus on situations that were far from reality . Looking back , I understand now that subconsciously I was cluing in on the fact that those fantastic shows typically had more imaginative writing , more originality and thusly more to say to me than " Three's Company " or " Dallas " . The Joy of Cartoons  Who could imagine a Saturday morning without cartoons ? These days , prime time 'toons are nothing new , but way back when Jonny Quest was a trendsetter with its evening slot . For those of us at it's televised premiere it cemented rather outrageous ideas for what has since become a sterile and mindless entertainment medium for children . Espionage , sex and violence were a day to day occurence for Jonny and his circle of comrades , far and above the pablum dished out to kids since , to this day the Quest cartoons are still entertaining . I didn't know it at the time , but Jezebel Jade taught me everything I know about femme fatales . At the least , she continued the education received innocently enough from Julie Newmar's " Catwoman " .  NOT Intended for Kids . . .
Needless to say , perhaps , but the ultimate " bad girl " was indeed a cartoon , the inimitable Boopster herself ; that inflappable " flapper " , Betty Boop . Having missed out on her original theatrical releases , I discovered Betty on TV and if any female character can be said to have led the battle of the sexes , that little lady drawn with pen and ink did . Forget the toned down Betty of the war years , her sultry , sexy early incarnations are the finest and God bless the narrow minded television programmers who saw fit to introduce her to me when adventures such as hers were never meant to be pondered by innocent young eyes . I can thank Max Fleischer for my twisted take on the female animal .   TeeVee's Hottest Babes , at least in MY opinion are coming up next .
