The Bane Of Darth Fatalus

You've heard it from me so many times here at Geeb-O-Rama , I love the way figures just " happen " . It's the Men With Dolls Forum August Custom/Kitbash of the Month Contest , and I was merely toying around with my gals , trying to decide what type of kitbash I would enter and " VIOLA ! " , Thaay was born .

I blame the combination of Alternative Dark Version Princess Jun's thigh high boots and Triad Toys' Kabuki White version kimono for the inspiration to create Jedi Master Thaay Katar . Something about the look of it made me think that I had the basis for a custom Jedi Knight , and I needed one too , as a nemesis for my original Star Wars Custom the Sith Witch Darth Fatalus .

Jedi Master Thaay Katar

Born Thevaya Khatii on the planet Naboo , her family has served as Royal Protectors for generations . Had she not been detected and identified for training as a Jedi she would have joined her sisters as a Royal Decoy .
As was tradition during the early years of the Jedi Order , having matured in her use of the Force and achieving the rank of padawan , Thevaya took a new name , Thaay Katar and quickly rose to prominence within the Jedi Knights . A primary factor in Thaay's swift rise within the jedi order was her natural ability to tap into both the living and unifying aspects of The Force with ease . A student of calm and stoic demeanor , other jedi often joked that she was only heard to speak on three occasions ; an exaggeration to be sure , but her unspoken will often voiced itself quite succinctly .
Surprisingly , Thaay had progressed so quickly in her training as Padawan she was ready for The Trials at the age of sixteen . However , her Master bade her to wait until her twentieth year before undergoing the tests that would make her a Jedi Knight . During this time she concentrated on perfecting the construction of the weapon of the Jedi , the Lightsaber , and it is to her credit that the commonly recognized form of the Jedi's Signature weapon is attributed .

Jedi Knight-Errant

Long before the establishment of the Jedi Temple on Corruscant , having attained the rank of Jedi Knight would mean years of wandering through the galaxy serving a role as a peacekeeper and protector pro tempore . Often it meant that Jedi would go for years without encountering another of their kind and a very lonely monastic existance , still this way of life contributed greatly to the mythology and lore that has come to surround the Jedi Order and was instrumental in the vitally important role the order would come to hold within the Old Republic . Over the years , the name of Thaay Katar would echo throughout the territories along the Outer Rim . A name that would eventually be whispered with fear and hatred on the Sith homeworld .

Creating Thaay's Lightsaber

Lightsabers are a real kick to create , and not only because they are such a cool weapon . Being that each Jedi Knight creates his or her own lightsaber as part of their training they are as unique and individual as their creator , allowing the customizer a wide latitude when cobbling one together . Thaay's lightsaber was built using parts from Takara's 1: 18 scale Microman action figure line .

Kitbashing and Modification

Three different Microman sets contributed to the weapon of my new Jedi Master , Microlady Acroyear , MicroLady Ninja and Microman Kong . The main body of the saber was originally a laser pistol from the combo giant robot form of Kong , the Power cell was an arm band from Ninjalady and the Belt Hook from Acroyearlady . The Power Cell and Belt Hook were cemented together and the barrel of the kong laser gun was dremeled down to form a pin that would fit the female fitting of the Power cell / Belt Hook assembly . The primary reason I made the lightsaber a 2 piece construction was to allow placement in the figure's hands simple .

Taking Advantage of the Details

I was able to include the combined features of both Darth Vader's and Luke Skywalker's Lightsabers from the original Star Wars film into Thaay's saber thanks to all the silly little details of the individual pieces used to create it . The Blade Length Adjust was a flathead pin from another model and the Blade Intensity Adjust is a micro magnet that was the perfect size to fit the pin hole fitting on the handle . The Blade Emitter Shroud was originally flat faced , due to this was where the gun handle of the original Microman pistol folded down . I dremeled it concave in order to more readily fit the lightsaber's removeable blade and cemented over that an additional cut , filed and shaped piece of sheet aluminum just to add a bit of additional detail and realism .

Magnetic Attachment System

Since it is a requirement to have the option of both an inactive and activated lightsaber , I once again utilized magnets to make switching out the blade quick and clean .
