	The Ultimate Samurai Movie There are very few films that make it to my " All Time Greatest Films " list , fewer still are those I consider to be of such superior quality that they are elevated to a position of " you have not lived until you've seen . . ." status . Akira Kurasawa's " Shichin-no-Samurai " or as most American's know it , " Seven Samurai " is one of those few . I've been fortunate enough to see this film on the big screen and if I had my way , it would get an annual showing in theatres because there really is no other way to view it . " Seven Samurai " is epic adventure at its best . Set in feudal Japan during the 16th century, its premise is a simple one : a peasant village is beset by marauding bandits , and for protection enlist the services of seven mercenary samurai . From this humble fabric , Kurosawa weaves a dramatically complex tapestry of the human condition , its failings and frailty as well as its virtues and strength . The Magnificent Seven Bringing armor to the samurai in a pivotal moment in the film , Kikuchiyo reveals his origins and makes a biting diatribe at the caste system when it is learned the very farmers they have come to protect had taken it from defeated samurai ambushed as they fled the battlefields . It's a tense moment , as the samurai contemplate exacting vengeance on the farmers . Kikuchiyo's passion for the ideals of bushido , and Kenbei's wisdom concerning the balance between personal and real world ethics force the seven to re-evaluate the roles they have taken in life and the current situation . From this point on , the relationship between the samurai and the farmers renews with a positive vigor as the societal barriers between the classes are replaced by shared humanity . With a running time of 208 minutes, this is a long film . The first two hours are devoted to introducing the characters of the samurai , all archetypes , from the leader / father figure of Kenbei to the cynical yet comic persona of Mifune's Kikuchiyo , all typify certain samurai ideals concerning life and how it is lived . The last hour and a half is one of the most riveting and spectacular battles put to celluloid as the samurai wage a ferocious war with the bandits . Previews of Coming Attractions . . .
