It Ain't No Samurai Figure Collection Without Toshiro!

My Onna Bugei-sha , Makabe Shino , was the first buke class custom action figure I created for my Cool Girl Collection using the CG Aska figure . Shino recently got a costuming upgrade since I decided to hand off the hakama costume set that I originally purchased for her over to my Subodai the Mongol figure having decided to use that as a base for a Toshiro Mifune custom .

Subodai's Headsculpt Is an Awesome Toshiro Likeness

I purchased Dragon's Subodai The Mongol figure solely for the fact that the headsculpt was based on Toshiro Mifune , and I desperately wanted to have a samurai character in my collection that payed tribute to this legendary character actor from numerous classic samurai films . When one considers the pricetag for most figures that are licensed Mifune characters from his various roles ( the lowest being $299 ) ; being able to get a good Mifune headsculpt on a nicely articulated body for less than $70 is a great deal . It would need just a slight bit of modification .

Deciding On The Best Way to Approach The Hair

I was unsure how I wanted to capture the traditional chonmage hairstyle that samurai wore , and in particular the fairly specific style worn by Mifune in most of his roles . There was a certain appeal and desire to recreate the hairstyle using real hair , although to do this would require a great deal of work and may not have captured the look as precisely as I might want . In the end I decided to combine both a sculptured hair piece and a real hair topknot , after first trying a full real hair piece . The real hair just didn't lay properly when glued in place and tied up . I suppose I could have done some cutting and trimming to the wig , but when I considered the amount of " barbering " that would entail , as well as the fact that unless I actually created a wig from scratch I would not be able to really recreate the hairstyle to my specifications , I decided the sculptured and real hair combo would be the best method .

Kneadatite and Barbie Hair

I used Kneadatite to sculpt Toshiro's hair , during several sessions , executing the sides , top and back and then the section where I would insert the topknot hair plug . I did two hair plugs , the first was glued over a twist tie to enable me to bend the top knot to shape but that ended up being too thick . My second attempt was just a straight up swatch of hair that I tied off with thread loops to get the loop and then dipped in Woodland Scenics " Scenic Cement " to form the oiled end of the topknot that extends over the crown of the head . It looked pretty good .

Painting The Hair

I used DecoArts Acrylics to paint the sculpted hair , and I still need to go in and add some individual loose strands around the sideburn areas and temples , but the overall look is matching up fairly nicely with the real hair and the stock hair color .
