And at that same time Jonny Quest hit the airwaves . There were few times in those days that I failed to imagine Joe not as the fighting man he was meant to be , but as Jonny's bodyguard Roger " Race " Bannon . There was something about " Race's " design and the look of the classic GI Joe that when topped with blonde hair , an imaginative little kid couldn't help but link the two . It has taken me quite some time , but I have finally begun to create my " Race " Bannon action figure . Using a collector's edition Joe head topping a Volk's Neo Body Male , and sporting the trademark Bannon Red Flap shirt , I have a feeling that my Cool Girls are going to be having firefights to see who gets to go out with him . Of course , now I'm wondering . . . can Jezebel Jade be far behind ?   Having never created a pattern for a shirt before , this was a rather engaging project , especially since I was attempting to capture Race Bannon's distinctive red flap shirt . It is actually quite a simple design and fairly easy to construct , and I will post a printable version once I make a few adjustments in case you might want to create one for your own . The most difficult aspects are the collar and the sleeves ( since they have that little V cut in them at the hem of the cuff ) . The difficulty factor of both of these aspects of the shirt are really more to do with capturing the shape and the type of fabric used . I was using a red bandana picked up at the local craft shop and it had a tendency to unravel making crisp edges difficult . This shirt is far from perfect , but it was a good learning project , and on successive attempts hopefully I will be able to amend the weak parts . I found a suitable set of pants at OJI , to replace the stand-in trousers Race wears now , the new ones are his trademark grey and look to be a finer weave . Race is currently wearing Bounty Hunter Hannah's short brown rubber boots which work well enough , though I will most likely pick up some leather that is colored more closely to Bannon's from the cartoon and make some custom boots . A hair color change is imminent along with some minor headsculpt adjustments , namely the removal of GI Joe's trademark scar , some carving in of Race's character lines around his mouth and a repaint from Joe's eyebrows to Race's .  I painted Joe's head pretty quickly , acrylics over the original paint job , the only part where I actually removed the stock paint was the eyebrows , in order to raise them up onto his brow ridge . I purposely used thicker applications on paint on Race's hair in order to let the brush strokes show , a cheap and easy way of simulating the relief of sculpted hair while still maintaining the look of the cartoon character . I used a dremel and x-acto knife to shave away Joe's trademark scar and cut in the character lines on the sides of race's face . I then used a microfilm abrasive sheet to smooth the cuts and blend the details into the head . I used a Burnt Sienna and Sienna Brown Eagle Verithin colored pencils to add some shading to the character lines and then blended and softened them with a Berol Prismacolor Colorless Blender Marker ( basically an alcohol based solvent used for blending markers in pen form ) . It's a lot easier than painting or airbrushing and allows for much more subtle coloring effects .   Maybe it was due to the fashion trends of the early sixties , but I thought Joe , Race and even James Bond bore striking similarities in their appearance . I don't think anyone will disagree that once repainted GI Joe makes a remarkably effective and simple conversion to Race Bannon , even though he parts his hair on the wrong side .
