The Scarlet Scorpion is Just a Cool Super Hero If there was ever an AC Comics character who NEVER got enough coverage , I'd have to say it was the Scarlet Scorpion . His origin was told in Americomics # 6 , he had a short-lived ( only TWO issues ) series he shared with "The Shade" , and he appeared as back-up in the " Nightveil " series for issues 2, 3 , 4 , 6 and 7 . Most of his appearances within the AC Universe have been in support roles , as part of the Sentinels of Justice , and he would pop up now and again in the pages of Femforce . My first opportunity to draw him was in Femforce # 36 , the conclusion of The Shroud War , and he's had me in his pincers ever since . The Scorpion is a classic super hero , basically your average working class schmoe who by events beyond his own control , received extraordinary abilities ; namely an amazing cellular regeneration capability as well as heightened strength , endurance and perception . Like any decent person , he decides to put his new abilities toward the service of law and order , by adopting the guise of a long missing masked hero called The Scarlet Scorpion . He's a stand up guy , with plenty of street saavy , which is part of what I've always found appealing about him .  So Much Fun to Draw . . . and rare opportunities to do so !
I never got to draw Scorp as much as I would have liked , but I always enjoyed those rare moments when he would make an appearance in an issue of Femforce that I was illustrating . He has a great look with the scarlet and black costume , and his powers , while quite above and beyond those of mere mortals are still subdued enough where he isn't an unstoppable force . The closest he ever came to being a " superman " was during the time he was under the influence of the Goat God Capricorn , and he beefed all up like a mutant " Image Comics " superhero , a look Bill Black absolutely hated ! HAHAHA!! I will admit I prefer him with more normal proportioning . When I started writing for AC , if there was any way to include him within the framework of the story you could be assured that I would do so , just to get another chance to draw him . I would also strive to insure that his appearance was meaningful and more than just a cameo . I had always wanted to build an emotional relationship between She-Cat and the Scorpion but unfortunately never really had the opening to do so . That all will change as Scorpion becomes part of The Femforce Millennium Universe in his new series " Pearls of Blood " . By this time , one might be ready to find out more about this new series , and what it will mean to Femfans , and to the Femforce as well in that it is a spin off series and not part of true AC continuity . That is , of course , the reason for this Geeb-O-Rama featurette ; since the creation and development of this series have been quite atypical as regards the evolution of a standard " print " comic series . I'll also be spilling a few " cool beans " concerning the plot . A Gritty World of Blood and Darkness  The Scarlet Scorpion has always been a bit of a dark character , not so much himself , as the world he tends to frequent ; the underbelly of society . Scorpions themselves are creepy , ugly critters , and being nocturnal for the most , inherently conjure up spooky images of fear . When I began customizing my " chop sockey " Cool Girls , the colors were the same as Scorpion's , and that was what got the ball rolling , Scorp's abilities just lent themselves to a martial arts framework and scorpions ( at least for me ) tend to reflect certain Far Eastern imagery , and so I thought , " It would be great to come up with a " Kung Fu storyline " for the Scarlet Scorpion as well as inject some new blood into the World of the Femforce , via the heroines of " Pearls of Blood " . Setting the story in Hong Kong would not only put the Femforce into a more global perception ( being that most of their adventures tend to occur within the americas ) but Hong Kong itself has that same kind of " New York / New Jersey urban filthiness " where Mike McCluskey would feel at home . Encapsulated in the Chop Sockey genre , the paranormal abilities possessed by The Scarlet Scorpion are more attuned and thus will allow more " average " super heroics instead of " apocalyptic " threats needed to challenge the likes of a Ms. Victory or a Nightveil . The inclusion of She-Cat allows me to build on that " just under the surface " sexual tension that exists between 'Cat and Scorp , as well as providing the catalytic plot device that will tie the threads of " Pearls of Blood " and " Femforce " together .  When the Scripps Museum initiates a World Tour of their renowned " Sekhmet " exhibit , the uproar that ensues from the country of Myanmar ( formerly Burma ) when excluded from a route that includes China and Viet Nam , forces the Colorado Project to assign security operatives to ensure the safety of the travelling exhibit in the Far East . Sublety is the primary concern for the U. S . govt. , not wanting to add fuel to the fires of controversy surrounding the exhibit's removal from Burma during the 1930's ; but She-Cat is given the assignment anyway , and serving as backup , Scarlet Scorpion also draws duty . All well and good for these two , who have been hankering for a chance to take a slow boat to and from China with each other ; even when it's by jet! When the museum exhibit is hijacked in Hong Kong , the Scarlet Scorpion finds himself on his own as She-Cat succumbs to a strange malady and vanishes from a medical facility , leaving in the wake , evidence of a particularly savage animal attack . Embroiled in Hong Kong P. D . red tape , Scorp finds unexpected assistance from the outside in the guise of two enigmatic women , referred to on the streets of Hong Kong as " The Pearls of Blood " . In 1938 , the " Curse of the Cat Goddess " brought sensation seekers in droves to marvel at the Burmese relics collected by Dr. Thaddeus Hunt and established in the antiquities collection of the Scripps museum . No news passed from Burma concerning the massacre of a small tribe of locals during that same time , and the regional legends of the Devil Cat Cult slowly dwindled to a mostly forgotten folk myth . The Power of Sekhmet apparently , like most pagan gods , dissipated with time ; the blood cult replaced with more human atrocities in that troubled region . It took five decades for Jessica Hunt , the daughter of Dr. Hunt , to gain control over the possessing spirit of the cat devil and the blood lust that once controlled every fiber of her being during the dark of night .
