Onna Bugei-Sha : Way of the Warrior

Not a Female Samurai , despite Appearances
Feeling a bit in the asian mood , I decided to follow up my Yuni custom ninja girl with a more traditional Japanese warrior , and figured I'd pay a bit of homage to not only my dear friend Dennis' RPG character Shino , but that famed female warrior Tomoe Gozen .

Despite the appeal of a lady samurai , that is not actually a correct term since samurai is a gender specific word in the japanese language , much like father , brother etc . There were however , women born into the samurai caste , and yes , some actually were trained in the martial arts and did fight in wars ( such as the aforementioned Tomoe Gozen ) .

That stated , I will now introduce my latest Cool Girl Custom , a female member of buke , the samurai class of feudal Japan ,
Makabe Shino .

Shino wears a kimono and hakama that I purchased off eBay from Miniorient , made for a " Ken " doll , but works well enough on a girl body , and is quite exceptionally sewn . Accurate right down to the open sleeves . I'll probably put some sort of mon on the kimono once I decide on a design . I specifically wanted this type of costume in favor of a female kimono simply to accentuate the fact that Shino is a warrior and thus needed to dress as one . I still need to give her the daisho , but until then have let her wear one of my Mononofu katanas . I'm looking for a simpler and more practical sword set . This figure did give me the opportunity to create one of my favorite weapons , a yari . The staff is a 1/4 inch wooden dowel , bead spacers were used as the rings with metal cylinders placed between them . The yari blade is aluminum cut and filed to shape . The yari still needs to get a butt cap . Yaris were of varying lengths , and this one is of the the shorter styles that were typically carried by samurai .

Below you'll see the completed buttcap of the yari . Surprisingly simple to create using an aluminum cylinder , a bead spacer , the endcap from an earring and the pin from a plastic pushpin .

Creating a Japanese Saddle set
Having created my lady warrior , next came the creation of her mount . Once again , I was faced with the dire fact that no one makes Japanese saddles and tack in 1:6 scale , so it was up to my own devices to create one . Fortunately , compared to european or western saddles , Japanese saddles are fairly simple in their design , and one can get away with a lot just by utilizing the miriad of trinkets , fringe and ribbons found at the local craft store .

This shot is of the saddle and accoutrements in progress , and is not yet finished . . . a featurette on the construction of this saddle set is now in progress at Geeb-O-Rama and is rather extensive , 6 pages in length with a great many pictures and reference shots of japanese saddles . You can kwik jump to that section by clicking here !

Makabe Shino on her mount

The saddle set is all but finished , the only bit left to complete are the stirrups . I am awaiting the arrival of her daisho from a retailer in China , and then my onna bugeisha will be finished .
Daisho

Nothing quite distinguishes the rank of the samurai as the daisho , which is the combination of a " dai "
( long ) and "sho " ( short ) weapon set . The daisho was a matched pair , made by either a single sword maker or a single school of swordmaking . The most recognized daisho consisted of a katana and wakizashi , though it could consist of any variety of long and short swords , or merely identifying the tsuba ( hand guard ) .

In the 1:6 world , there are not many daisho available loose , most are part of boxed figure sets that are long out of production and run upwards of $200.00 . I was able to purchase Makabe Shino's daisho on eBay from a retailer in Singapore who had broken up D i D 's " Date Masamune action figure . There is a HUGE difference between an actual 1:6 scale sword set compared to the 1:9 scale Mononfu weapons that are fairly easy to obtain . The Mononofu sets consist of die cast blades and resin scabbards and hilts , the DiD daisho is all die cast steel with actual ribbon sageo and ito .

Yep , I paid too much for this daisho , but it completes the custom so nicely , I can't complain at all .
