1:6 Scale Bases

In addition to their outstanding figures , accessory sets , clothing , et al ; Triad Toys' is also creating a line of dioramas and base accessories that fit into their various lines . Their initial release was the Mayan Triarama , a limited run piece of 800 , that I just recently acquired . Diorama nut that I am , I was really tempting fate by waiting so long to pick up this piece , but I didn't have any figures that truly fit in with the theme of the set until relatively recently .

With my adventuring archaeologists Dakota Montana and Alabama Birmingham ( like Indiana Jones all the best Adventuring Archaeologists are named after states , y'know ! ) I finally had some characters to accessorize this accessory .

Expanding On The Theme

The Mayan Triarama is a quality base , pretty much a given when talking about stuff from Triad , and while stock straight from the box it's ready to be put to use , with two figures it gets a bit too cozy and intimate , so I decided to expand upon the concept . This was a fairly simple expansion , being that I had a plastic base that was suitably proportioned for the task . I had glommed this base from a Jack Daniels bourbon display pole topper from the holidays ( like Barb Dark's Mausoleum , Jack Daniels Holiday displays always make GREAT 1:6 scale dioramas !

I added a styrofoam ring as the base expansion piece , covered with a layer of Celuclay . The craft store didn't have a styrofoam disk sized to the dimensions I needed which is why I picked up a ring , I then inserted a styrofoam disk to the interior space ( supported by toothpicks ) and plugged the gap with twisted up newspaper . All this was covered with the Celuclay in two thin layers . My biggest complaint about Celuclay is that it takes so damn long to dry , but in thin layers it dries pretty quick , which is why I chose to cover the styrofoam in two layers . Texturally speaking the stuff is great for creating stone-like texture with little fuss .
Some Photoshop Comping

Since I'm kinda building this expansion on the fly , aside from the main Triarama base , I really have no idea where I'm going with this piece . When constructing a diorama it's always good to have some kind of clue concerning the design because it makes the construction process proceed much easier . The Mayan Triarama in and of itself is a fairly detailed base , so when it comes to the expanded base work I needed to see just how much detail would be required to carry this expansion through , and to see what I wanted as far as further base detailing . I didn't know whether I wanted to add some sort of framing columns , or walls or more bas relief sculptures , so to that end I went into my Photoshop program and began working on a comprehensive " sketch " of the expanded base to help my creative processes for this base .

At this stage I will likely keep the individual masonry to a minimum , aside from some relief carved rings around the major circumference rings , and looking at it at this stage of development I am rethinking large columns in favor of smaller more ornately carved columns . It's all pretty much still up in the air at this point but the photoshop work is helping me visualize my course .
