 From the start , as we travel along with the bickering , disconcerted protagonists of The Old Dark House , assaulted by the elements and assailed by the crumbling roadway , we know that we're in for a show . Forced by the storm to seek haven in a dilapidated mansion three socialites find themselves confronted by a family who give the term dysfunctional its due .  Their burdened host , Horace Femm ; Ernest Thesiger at his nostrilly best , appears genteel enough yet his all too apparent paranoia leaves his unexpected guests off kilter . Joined shortly by his deaf sister Rebecca , a gnarled and rude fanatic as well as two more stranded travellers the stage is set for an evening of bizarre goings on .  As the storm outside worsens , the five weary refugees find themselves in the company of dark intrigue . Hints from the mad Rebecca concerning the excesses of her father having brought a wrath upon the house , the uneasy fears of Horace who lets slip that the mute butler Morgan , played with more than appropriate menace by Karloff , tends to violence when he drinks . . . and storms make him hit the bottle . Most unsettling of all , having intruded upon the invalid patriarch of the Femm household Sir Roderick , the Waverlys ( Raymond Massey and Gloria Stewart ) , learn that yet one more Femm resides within this benighted household " The cleverest of us all " Saul , imprisoned behind a padlocked door at the top of the stairs . This film marked Charles Laughton's debut in Hollywood and Gloria Stewart did wonders for a silk evening gown . Thesiger , of course , stole the show .  Drive-In Madness Coming to the next Matinee at the Bijou . . .
One of the finest works of screen arts , Akira Kurosawa's, often imitated never equaled .
