Jungle Girl Comics That Never Were

When I was little , I could go outside with my toys and play , but now that I am " grown up " , that kind of behavior does naught but garner odd stares of bewilderment from the neighbors . So instead , I play with my toys in a more " sophisticated " and " adult " manner , which is setting up photoshoots and then taking the images and digitally turn them into fun works of art . My Leopard Girl and her gigantic ape pal " Konga " inspired me to do up some pulp adventure magazine covers that never were .
The Artwork Is The Same , only the Medium Changes

I would define these mock-up covers as typically Gorby . This is the type of material I spent 20 years doing professionally . 7 years ago I would have either drawn these in pencil , pen & ink or painted them in gouache , now I can do the same using action figures and computer graphics programs .

The set and backdrop are from a variety of sources , the base is a terrain diorama framed with silk plants , and the backdrop is a sofa sized original oil painting I purchased 6 years ago . The title blurbs are cropped from actual pulp magazine covers with some additional cover verbage generated in my graphics program .
Using Action Figures for Digital Illustration

I've been having a ball doing photo set ups using my leopard girl and kong figure . Typically when I do a photo retouch , I shoot my figs on a neutral background , with a slight arc to remove any horizon line , kind of like an infinity cove . This I will light in a rather low tech method , using whatever lights I have on hand , but for the more serious attempts of photo bashing I will try to set up with at least three light sources . One light source serves as an ambient overall lighting , I will then set up at least one key light for highlights and then , if I'm feeling particularly ambitious a third for a secondary key light source ( sometimes opting for a colored gel ) . The third light is in this particular instance a flourescent light placed to the left side of the image , just slightly behind the Leopard girl . The cool blue light of the flourescent makes nice secondary reflections off the plants which is what gives that nice greenish secondary highlight to the leopard gal . The key light source is from a halogen desk lamp placed below the figures , which gives nice strong lighting , the ambient lighting comes from above , a floor lamp that knocks back the harshness of the halogen while also adding a warm coloring to the scene .

Your lighting set up can greatly influence the look of your image , and I strongly encourage playing around with a variety of lighting set ups . Changing the positions and placement of your lighting can do much to capture a particular mood .

This particular live set up is a first , since all the elements are staged , with no photo bashing other than various filters to give the photograph a painterly appearance . The backdrop is , as mentioned previously , part of a sofa sized oil painting original placed behind the figures and diorama base . The diorama base is a simple terrain diorama I built solely as a scene stage , constructed of plaster wrap and wire mesh over a cut wooden frame . This was then covered in various diorama scenics such as turf , dried grasses and lichen .

To hide the edges of the terrain diorama , I framed the base with silk greenery . I then set up various lighting arrangements and started posing and shooting .

For the finished image , I imported the photograph into two different graphics programs , the first being XaraX , a vector based image editing program that won't degrade the resolution regardless of the size of the image . I use XaraX to do crops and image editing . In this example I cut and pasted more rocks at the bottom left of the image and covered up some of the frame that was showing to the right of Kong's head .

I then increased the image file's size and exported it to my Serif PhotoPlus 8 program which is a raster based photo editing program , much like Photoshop at a fraction of the price . Not quite the equivalent of PS , but close enough that many of the bells and whistles available in Photoshop can be replicated . Compared to the 500 dollar pricetag of Photoshop , the $60 dollar price of Serif PhotoPlus is a heck of a deal .

Using the " instant artist " filters I rendered the photo to have the feel of an oil painting , this I then softened with a smart blur and went in with an image cloning brush to hide the figures' jointing . The end result has a very painted look to it . I saved the original rendering at full size at 100 dpi and then imported it back to XaraX where I reduced it to 56 dpi and exported it in a JPeg format .
