I Can't Draw! How The Heck Can I Sculpt !?

I am very lucky , blessed as I was with the talent and natural ability to ; as a friend once described , " Organize a bunch of scratchy lines to look like something . " Even if you don't possess such ability , you can sidestep it by understanding the basic building blocks of head construction . If you can discern a straight line and a center point , you will be able to build a head . Your initial attempts may not be perfect , but the key here , as with most things is to not give up and practice , practice, practice !

Learn to Identify the Simple Shapes of The Face

All faces are different , but they are also the same . The difference comes in subtle variation of line and form . Learn to identify the basic and simple shape that makes up a complex form and constructing that form becomes easy .

Starting Your Head Sculpt

Once you chopped down your Shockini's block head you can begin the fun of sculpting a new head . Depending on your skill level you may want to create a rough sketch of the head you want to sculpt . Do it from 3 sides , the front , the left and the right . Next you'll want to apply your sculpey , a blob will do , a bit larger than the head itself . You will want to form an egg shape over the head . To determine the facial planes you can eyeball it , or use the tip of your needle to sketch in your construction lines .

Refining your Basic Sketch

In drawing , one starts with a rough pencil sketch which is then erased , refined , erased more , refined more until the final drawing is achieved . Sculpting is exactly the same essentially only in 3 dimensions rather than two . Erasing consists of shaving off bits of sculpey to shape your face and redrawing is simply pushing your clay around and reshaping it . Sculpting can actually be easier than drawing by virtue of the fact that you are seeing your creation in the round , you can " eyeball " whether or not your piece is working simply by turning it around and looking at it from different angles .

The Hard Part : Detailing Your Face

The most difficult aspect of facial sculpts is applying the details . At the scale of a Shockini , even a slight imperfection in proportion is really magnified . Compound this by the knowledge that at this scale the sculpey is so thin it is really maleable and easily deformed . You really need to have a gentle touch . Of course the high side of this is that you can achieve a great deal with a minimum of effort , one stroke can often be all you need to add a detail . It is often helpful at this stage to have a small arsenal of " one stroke " tools available . These are specialized tools created specifically to handle particular jobs . These tools are " hooks " , and they are simple yet effective . In a nutshell they are bent needles, that are used to form the curves of nostrils, the shape of eyelids , the lines in a face or the curves at the corners of the mouth .

Creating A Set of Hooks

Hooks are easy to create . You will need some wooden dowels , and some needles or straight pins , a set of needle nose pliers and a lighter, or candle . You can also utilize your jewelers/hobby files here as well . Take your pin or needle and heat the tip over flame til it glows red, then using your pliers , bend only the tip to a curved shape . You should create two versions , a crescent shape and a C shape . Then stick those needles into your dowels , which will form a handle .
