Technique is Everything

Achieving fantastic results in model building is not defined solely by artistic skill , which certainly is helpful , but by employing proper methodology in execution .

I've been building models of one form or another for thirty five years and while my artistic background has given me a certain edge , most of the skills I use to create are ones that anyone can utilize for success in their project . This section of Geeb-O-Rama is my forum for sharing my experience with you .
Setting Up Your Station : The Basics

There are multitudes of supplies available for the hobbyist , most of which are variations on a theme for specific tasks . To a certain extent these are superfluous , your basic work station can begin with very few materials that will allow you to get started .

We'll start with paint . My personal preference are acrylics simply because they are cheap , and dry quickly . They are water soluble making for easy cleanup . You only need primary colors to start with , Red , Blue , Yellow , White and Black . These you can use to mix every other color variation . Colored Acrylic Gesso is useful as a primer , or base , for application of paint . Priming your project serves to seal the surface ( preventing impurities in the model material from escaping and marring your paint job as well as providing a " tooth " for your paint to adhere to allowing even coverage . Colored Gesso is preferable by virtue of the fact that it's easier to see where it has been applied .

Brushes can get expensive , and again , there are a wide variety to choose from . You really only need 4 to start with . A " spotter " for fine detail work , a " round " for general painting and more expressive stoke work , a " filbert " for base paint application and blending , and an " angular " ; also for base paint application and getting sharp , crisp edging .

Prepping Your Model : A Sturdy Foundation Allows a Strong Finish

One of the most important aspects of miniature painting is the initial preparation of the model for painting . This basically is preparing the surface of your model by removing imperfections .

Whether your model is plastic , resin , or polymer clay the use of abrasive sheets are fundamental for prepping the surface . I use 2 types , an abrasize foam pad and plastic abrasive sheets , both of which are utilized for specific applications .

For general smoothing and removal of surface imperfections , i.e. parting lines , flash , the foam pad is used . The foam will contour to the surface and will not " catch " on the model scarring or gouging the surface . It's fine grain also provides a nice " tooth " to improve paint adhesion .

The plastic sheets have an even finer grain and are perfect for removing brush strokes as well as giving the final painted surface a uniform finish . For models with small details , these sheets can be folded allowing extremely precise smoothing in tight areas and to get crisp detailing .

Let's Get Started !

For the purposes of this demonstration I am using a Custom Shockini from Shocker Toys . These 3 inch tall action figures are a hobbyist's dream , and are perfect examples for this painting basics " how to " . For more on these fanatastic little action figures visit the Shocker Toys website at www.shockertoys.com .

The initial sanding work utilizes the 3M Sanding Sponge , on the entire figure . After finishing the initial base prep , the individual parts are separated and the finishing prep sanding is done . Your figure is now ready to be painted . At this stage you have 2 options , you may apply a priming base of gesso or just start painting , the tooth applied to the plastic surface by the abrasive sponge is suitable for good paint adhesion .

The benefit of applying a gesso base first is the fact that it will accentuate any imperfections you may have missed in your initial preparation .
