 Articulating The Legs
As I pondered the best way to articulate the legs I fell into a rather happy coincidence . I was somewhat concerned as to just what I could use in order to create suitable knee and ankle joints when I remembered that I had the perfect set of joints right under my nose . Actually they were almost better than perfect because they were about as close to machined joints used in stop motion animation models than I could ever have at the price I paid for them ( which was about $3.00 ! ) If you are familiar with my packing crate Sci-Fi diorama , you might remember a couple of telescoping steel rods I used on the exterior of the doorway as decoration . Those two rods came from a halogen desk lamp that I got on clearance , and since they were so cheap I bought two . I had a second set of metal hinges now that could serve a new life as the leg joints for my beastie . Once I tore apart the lamp and separated the telescoping rods , I chopped them down in size with my wire cutters and drilled holes into the leg bones , and then simply jammed the rods into their new homes . The high friction of the drill bit had the effect of melting the plastic of the model so I got very good , tight fits once I sank the rods into the leg bones . The only drawback to this was at the ankle joint , which due to the thinness of that area I ended up melting and deforming the ankle area somewhat . It's not a huge concern since I'll be covering the legs with skin . The knee and ankle joints could not have worked out any better .
