![]() One of the reasons I try not to rush through my various projects simply to " GET THEM DONE " ; is the fact that it is often wise to step back for a period of time in order to regain perspective . Whenever you are involved in a creative endeavor it's easy to get so caught up in it you can lose sight of the forest because of all the trees . This simple terrain diorama is a good example , being that it has for all intents and purposes been finished for several years - all that remained to be done was complete the exterior sides of the base . I have on many occasions considered wrapping it up , but none of the ideas for handling the finishing execution on the base really excited me . I shelved it . Its incomplete status did not dissuade me from utilizing it when the need arose for a terrain base for a photoshoot , and it gave me plenty of opportunity to see it from a great many Points of View whether as a setting for modern day jungle adventurers to fantasy themed warriors to archaic historical figures . Lately it has been serving as a display for my Onna Bugeisha , Makabe Shino and her mount and the finishing technique just suddenly materialized before me . As a naturalistic display base it made sense to utilize an organic medium to complete the base , and because it had been serving so well for my japanese themed warrior I decided to give it an eastern flavor and wrap the base in bamboo . I trucked over to Pier One Imports and bought a bamboo placemat for $2.00 and separated the shafts of bamboo and started sawing them to length and hot gluing them in place . The perfect finishing touch . ![]() The bamboo frame really sets this vignette off nicely , and despite the tedious nature of the process of cutting bamboo shafts and gluing them down it's all very easy . The vertical lines of the base framework also has the added effect of pulling your eyes up to the focal point of the scene : The mounted warrior . ![]() ![]() While specifically chosen for the far eastern motif , the bamboo remains neutral enough to allow placement of other figures , as my Leopard Girl amply demonstrates . ![]() ![]() With two sides of the bamboo framing the vignette begins to show how it will look completed , and is really showing why a nice vignette can take a good custom figure and step it up another notch . The figure of Estra La is moving from the action figure niche to a work of doll art . ![]() ![]() ![]() The bamboo framing is practically complete and then all that will be left to do is seal the raw cut edges of the bamboo and add a few finishing foliage bits . ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This vignette will likely find a home as the centerpiece for my coctail table . I may also add a turntable to the bottom , thus allowing the diorama to be rotated to be seen from all angles regardless of where one might be seated . ![]() Considering that the terrain base was commenced about three years ago , and the figures of Makabe Shino and her mount were pieced together during that same time it's hard to say just how many actual hours were spent in the creation of this little setpiece . Just a rough guesstimate , I'd say the whole thing probably took about 2 months .
