The Diorama As A Display Piece

Depending on the design of your diorama , there are a variety of options open to you concerning how it might be used as a display piece . For this particular vignette the very open nature of the design makes it a great centerpiece , something that can be viewed " in the round " rather than shoved into a shelf .

Having decided to follow through with this model as a centerpiece display required that I create some additional detail components for the exterior as well as expand a bit on the actual display floorspace that would allow inclusion of more figures , or simply heighten the posing and placement options of fewer figures . Currently there is enough room on this diorama to fit up to five 1:6 scale figures within it .

The plaster hardshell , which should have been one of the first things applied has finally been added to the diorama quite out of proper construction sequence and a basswood frame has also been cut and temporarily fitted to the base .

As with most of my dioramas , weight is a chief concern especially when dealing with a model of this size and that is why I use a plaster hardshell , it provides good structural strength to the base while not adding a lot of weight . The basswood frame is only 1/8 inch thick and is more of a sleeve than an actual base so again , adds very little additional weight and helps provide a nice clean finished look to the base of the diorama .

More Model Kit-Bashing

The grey unit of this exterior detail was originally constructed for the interior but since there really was no room to include it after the completion of the initial interior detailing it came in handy for placement on the outside wall . I don't know what function it might be serving and that is not much of a necessary concern as I'm really only using it as a bit of decoration ; I suppose it might be part of the humidifier or some part of the environmental control within the structure ( these types of matters really are of little import ) as they are intended merely to add visual interest . This unit was made from various space ship model kits , 1:6 scale accessories , electronic parts , a Star wars Speeder Bike model , Japanese robot model kit parts and car engine pieces as well as real metal screws and a washer and wires . I painted it with enamels and acrylics and weathered it with colored pencils , chalk pastels and sandpaper .

Jedi AC Unit Part Two

You never know where a neat bit of kit-bashing may originate . This exterior panel of the Jedi AC Unit started out as a replacement razor blade tray from Gillette ( I have also used these trays to construct 1:6 scale computer towers ) so they are indeed quite versatile ! The grill is part of an old camera . Again I used enamels and acrylics to paint it , using brush and airbrush and weathered it with pastels , colored pencils and abrasive sheets .

Adding More Floorspace

Once I had put on the initial plaster hardshell , I decided that I really needed to add some additional " standing room " at the doorway . I cut to shape some new styrofoam blocks and pinned and cemented them onto the exterior and layed on another application of plasterwrap . This was a rather small addition of floorspace but really enhanced the utility of the doorway as a posing display option .

Hardshell and Frame

Depending on how you want to finish your display base plays a great deal on how you might apply your plaster hardshell . Since there will be an additional application of textural acrylics to the new groundwork I don't need to do any additional plaster wrap apps or sanding to smooth the plaster . As you can see here , the canvas-like texture of the plaster wrap is showing thru and while one might wish to add more layers of plaster to smooth out this I plan on taking advantage of this texture when I paint the base .

With the strong textural element of the walls and tiled floor , and the crisp clean lines of the basswood frame , taking advantage of the canvas texture of the plaster wrap with an application of washes and glazes when painting the base will help add an impressionistic quality to the vignette that should contrast nicely with the ultra realism of the model as a whole .
