 During the time following their exile by the Old Republic and their adoption of Korriban as a new homeworld , The Dark Jedi began to build an empire of their own , using the conquered inhabitants of Korriban , the Sith , as their building blocks . From this melting pot of colonization and the very nature of the Dark Side to which these outcast Jedi were attuned a violent and clannish society grew . A period of civil war was the constant force for expansion and power for these Sith Clans as each sought to build a society according to their individual designs . It was a time of unsettled alliances , betrayal and subjugation . Out of this maelstorm of unrest and turbulent power struggles many heroes came to recognition ; and although much of the early histories of the Sith Empire have been lost with the passage of time and the conscious protection of their secrets , the name of Darth Fatalus has come into the light , so to speak , as a Sith Warrior that was instrumental in preventing the formative Sith Empire from devouring itself at its outset .  As the various clans co-mingled with the inhabitants of Korriban , and feuded between themselves for land and wealth and power , the strongest of the clans would often seal alliances with each other by arranged marriages to maintain a purity of the bloodlines of the founding Dark Jedi , despite the benefits of interbreeding with the naturally force gifted Sith . This eventually resulted in a social hierarchy known as the Blood Sith , the direct descendants of the original practioners of the Dark Side of the Force . Those clans that were smaller and less powerful were constantly at the mercy of the Great Lord and sought to strengthen their own position by delving deep into the Force Mysticism of the Korriban Sith . It may well be through their interbreeding with the Sith that the ability to use the power of the Dark Side to control life and death first came to fruition , though this is more a legend than any actual occurrance substantiated by fact . What has been uncovered is one of the bloodiest periods of the early Sith Empire that was brought about by the theft of a child .
