Barbra Dark Sees DEAD People . . .

Take a smidgen of Kolchak : The Night Stalker , add a dash of Mike Hammer and stir it up within a seething cauldron of H. P. Lovecraft and you have the setting for " Dark Babylon " ; a Gothic Good Girl Mystery storyline that may eventually see its way to Femforce Millennium .
Not exactly a part of the Femforce continuity , but somehow linked within it is a comic noir with tongue planted firmly in cheek for a fun series of adventures with a supernatural flair .
Featuring the thrilling paranormal detective Barbra Dark , who has an unnerving knack for solving mysteries with a distinctive air of the bizarre that the forces of justice are unable to solve on their own . Barbra Dark , famed children's literary author by day , with her associate , the strange and almost waif-like " girl friday " Malicia crosses into worlds most would prefer to leave alone by the rays of the moon . Armed only with her uncanny knack for peircing the veils of death and her trademark Occult .45's , she tackles cases that the police can't , or WON'T , solve .
Barbra dark Sees DEAD people . . . pray she DOESN'T see YOU !

Malicia Wanted a Puppie

Well , a puppie that befitted her personality at any rate . Work is now underway on an articulated Doberman .
Bashing A Dog Armature

I'm thinking that the main reason no one makes articulated dogs is because they're a pain in the @$$ !

That's not entirely true , you can get an armature for a stop motion dog for around $200 . Yeah , I really want to pay that for an action figure dog . Actually I would if it was in my budget , unfortunately it ain't . So it fell upon me to construct my own armature . As usual I'm wanting way too much way too quickly so I start rummaging through my box of odds 'n' ends to see what I can cobble together to get this dog going . Fortunately I 've picked up lots of do-dads over the course of time just as bash fodder , so it was just a matter of finding bits and pieces that would work together to give me what I wanted .

This dog has seventeen points of articulation . The head and neck and foreleg armature is constructed from a dumb little scorpion model , the leg segments to be specific , purchased just because it was all ball and socket joints which allow a great deal of movement . They aren't perfect but with some trimming they should be easily made the correct size and proportion for my dog .

The back legs were much trickier , because they required a much more intricate level of articulation . The hip section was a dremeled down torso and shoulder blocks from a Shockini , a 1/18 th scale blank action figure that rivals their competitor Stikfas . The lower back legs are bits and pieces from a lego kit , with CG wrist posts used for the foot joints , which will also be used on the forelegs . The tail articulation is really a pointless bit of articulation , but the CY Com Ninja neck joint was so perfect , I decided I'd give Rover the option of tail/stub wagging . HAH!
Tweaking The Armature

The basic armature needed to be adjusted to more accurately reflect the anatomy of my Doberman . Most of these adjustments were simple , just cutting down the individual jointing pieces . The neck , shoulder and foreleg pieces were chopped down and new post holes drilled in . The separate pieces were then epoxied together . The forelegs also were drilled to accept the wrist posts from cy girl hands that serve as the foot joints . I also raised up the post hole in the head to make allowance for the neck thickness .

I also dremeled the waist area to thin it out a bit more and have begun adding kneadatite around the joint areas that will receive the most amount of stress when moving the joints for posing to prevent the sculpey from fracturing once the figure is completed .

Just a note , as I have been working on this figure I have been thinking about how to go about building up and shaping the body to accomodate the articulation and retaining a fairly naturalistic dog appearance . To this end I may build up a basic musculature and then sew a " dog suit " from felt or perhaps fake fur and sew it over this armature , gluing it where I need a skin tight fit and leaving it loose at the joints , thus covering the actual jointing and at the same time making the dog furry . I really don't know if this idea will look realistic or not , but I think it's worth experimenting with .

Jack Daniels Inspires the Dark Mausoleum

Nope , that doesn't mean I was drinking whiskey when I came up with this . . .

I "adopted " the base from a holiday Jack Daniels pole top display ; upon the conclusion of the holidays because it had that neat little iron circular fence that I thought might be useful for a 1:6 scale diorama . Really had no idea what I would utilize it for but sometimes you see something that just strikes you as having potential .

Early in the conception of " Dark Babylon " I had envisioned that Barbra Dark would have a subterranean headquarters within a cemetary , in particular the Dark family plot upon the grounds of her estate .

With the quaint gothic style of the ironwork on this display piece it occurred to me that the egress to the underground vaults could be a grave marker or better yet a mausoleum type structure .

Designing The Dark Mausoleum

The pole top base is large , but the footprint within the framing iron fencework was relatively small , so I was not sure whether or not I could come up with a structure large enough to accomodate a 1:6 scale action figure that would look appropriate .

Prior to any work on the base , I went into Sketchup and created a 3D model representation and then created a basic model of the Mausoleum and imported my Barb Dark component to help visualize the proportions .

My conceptual sketch gave me enough of a previsualization to execute the initial formation of the structural components with very little error .
