Customizing Marx' Thunderbolt

Adding a Bit of life to Thunderbolt

When it comes to 1:6 scale horses , few models match the exceptional quality of Marx' classic Thunderbolt mold . The only flaw inherent in this great horse model is the static pose . I'm currently finishing up work on my Samurai Horse and since I planned on repainting the Valor horse upon which I created my samurai Saddle and Tack and add a realistic mane and tail , I decided I would also modify the model to add a bit more life to the pose .

I did not want to go for an extreme modification , really just add a bend to the neck and move the legs a bit to give the impression of movement . I took the horse into the kitchen , and using the front burner on the stovetop , heated the horse's various parts I wanted to modify and bent them to a new pose .

The neck was the first part I heated up , and as the plastic melted and got soft I gently bent it to the left , I did this three times , gradually increasing the degree of bend . This had the end result of splitting the seam down the back of the neck , which was not a detrimental effect since I intend to add a wefted hair mane to the model which requires I split the back of the neck anyway . The cheek of the head did deform in the process , but again , I will be adding additional sculpted on muscles and details to the neck and head so this also was not a big deal .

A Subtle Repositioning of Legs

After the neck , I then started heating the front ankle and leg , and bent it so that the ankle was straighter with the toe of the hoof pointed down and then bending the leg at the shoulder . I used my thumbnail to press the plastic in at the modelled shoulder muscles to aid in the bending process , the end result being a more foreward stepping front leg . I repeated this same process on the back leg on the same side .

These modifications are very subtle but are just enough to give Thunderbolt a livelier sense of motion and once repainted with a new mane and tail and some muscular enhancements will really make this appear to be a completely different horse .

Stay tuned as this WIP progresses , and keep an eye out for more elaborate Thunderbolt customizing tips , since I still have the Valor version of Thunderbolt which I plan on utilizing to create a much more dynamic modified horse .
