Riding Into The Sunset . . .

After more than a year , providing my failing memory serves me correctly , I have at least reached the final stages of my custom cowgirl , Copperhead Penny ; done as a special commission for Stevo of Stevo's Toys . To be sure , that much time spent in the saddle has garnered my fair share of saddle sores ; but Copperhead Penny is FINISHED !

The finishing touches on Penny were no small feat , despite being relatively insignificant embellishments . It was a matter of finding just the right items to get the 1:6 scale action figure on my workbench to match the vision that had been formed in my mind's eye of just what Copperhead Penny should look like . In the interim period , as I continued work on other customs , my skills improved and I was able to go back and improve bits and pieces of Penny while I sought out those last few bits of detail accoutrements that would complete Penny as well as make some revelations on how to do things with her that now seem so obvious but when I began her were mystifying me . All through this Stevo has waited patiently , allowing me the time to execute a figure that I consider a real work of art and join my small rank of Signature Customs . Penny is pretty close to being the 1:6 scale equivalent of the type of artwork I left behind just over seven years ago .

Copperhead Penny : Nit Picking

The finishing work on Penny entailed very much the small amount of work I had imagined she would require when I left her to stew on my workbench oh so long , long ago . I had reached an empasse on her , she had ridden up to the edge of the precipice of completion but couldn't spur her horse to take that final leap . For the most she was just what I had envisioned when I began work on her , but there were certain elements lacking , little details I wanted for her but didn't have a suitable method to achieve . Taking a time out on her gave me the time to not only locate sources for her finishing details , but also allowed me to improve my customizing skills so that those areas I felt were lacking could be redone . I'm sure Stevo , despite his infinite patience , was ready to strangle me . In the end , Penny has succeeded in fulfilling everything I wanted to achieve as a doll artist .

From Hairbands to Canteens

During her initial work , how to fix Penny's trademark braids had me stupefied . I had originally tied them off with wrapped brass wire , but wasn't happy with how they looked . Looking back I feel like an idiot for not realizing that all I needed do was create simple brass hairbands . Her Arkansas Toothpick also had a minor flaw , the buttcap was not stable , the pin attaching it to the wood handle was not long enough . Again it was so simple a fix , just filing down a brass screw with a longer pin to sink into the handle . While I was at it , I sewed her a new sheath for her knife , since I had acquired some better leather for the job and my sewing skills had improved since the creation of her original knife sheath . The canteen was something I had been seeking since her inception , but was never able to find one in 1:6 scale that fit my specific needs for the character . After doing a bit of research on civil war era canteens , and rummaging around my " parts " bin I was able to find the perfect assortment of odds and ends to allow me to recreate an accurate representation of an 1800's era canteen . It actually uncorks too !

The Canteen In Detail

The body of the canteen is part of a model kit , an old spaceship kit to be exact , that had a ring of encircling fuel tanks . One of these was cut down to form a ring . I then cut a bit of leather to encircle that ring , punching a hole into it to accept the neck of the drinking spout . The pewter spout is made from an aluminum cylinder , the cork was punched out from an actual polymer cork from a vodka bottle and the cap of the cork made from a round brad . I used thread to make the cord that attaches the cork topper to the canteen . The sides of the canteen are made from some leftover plastic screw covers from a Sauder furniture set that just happened to be the perfect size , with felt glued over them . The metal bands that hold the canteen together as well as attach the strap are cut from sheet aluminum .

Feathers and Boots

Feathers were another finishing detail I wanted for Penny that were a hard find . I had gotten so determined to use real feathers that I had set myself up for an impossible task . Nobody makes real miniature eagle feathers! Fortunately Bear Johnson over at One Sixth Depot was able to provide me some 1:6 scale eagle feathers bashed from some of the Dog Soldiers figure line .

I had original tried my hand at hand sewing some cowboy boots for Penny , and while the boots I made were satisfactory , they just lacked the proper " oomph " that I wanted for this figure . Fortunately for me , during the time that penny was simmering on the workbench , Toy Soldier released their Bounty Hunter Babe , who had a nice pair of cowboy boots which fit perfectly for the kind of boots I wanted for Penny . I kept the Cool Girl arched boot feet on the figure , slipping the boots over those , and Penny is able to stand quite nicely , far better even than the figure for which they were made !

Ready to Hit The Trail

I am awaiting the final two accessories for Penny to arrive , which will then mark the technical completion for this custom , and then she will ride off into the sunset . . . towards her new home with Stevo at Stevo's Toys .
