Cool Girl Kitbashes : Everything Old is New

The Candy Strikers

As a former comic book artist , I've been enjoying using my Cool Girls as " sketchbooks " , to conceptualize new creative endeavors or as in the case of " the Candy Strikers " to breathe new life into old files from my archives . Early in 1986 , I started the groundwork on a team of female mercenary troubleshooters I called " The Candy Strikers " , a nod and chuckle homage to 70's exploitation cinema and Japan's " Dirty Pair " . As I expand the parameters of my online netcomix site Femforce Millennium , the Online Femforce Comic Series inspired by Bill Black's Femforce Comic , I have been creating new storylines to round out the content and diversify the material so that it builds upon the AC Universe that FemFans have come to know and love and offers the opportunity to provide alternative context for the established AC characters to interact within outside of their normal venues .

Stay tuned for an upcoming featurette on the " The Candy Strikers " ; for now , here is a preview of the kitbashes done as concept character sketches . You can find out about " Heidi Pomeroy " at her original posting , just click on her name and scroll to the bottom of the page .

Cool Girl A. J . becomes Rita Sauvignon

I really like the A.J. McLeod action figure , which is why I bought 2 to begin with , both of which have been customized from their original form . Perhaps due to far too many viewings of the classic " Avengers " TV series , she reminds me of Diana Rigg , even moreso when decked out in Funtoys' blue pleather catsuit . I used the bootfeet from the " Before Cardinal Garrison " version of Ice because I liked the contrast of white soles to the dark blue of the tops . Her gear needed to be light yet well-suited to infiltration and espionage and was borrowed from 21st Century Toys' " Jacqueline " figure , specifically the Sniper Rifle back pack , Scorpion Machine Pistol with silencer and stiletto . The silencer's pouch was utilized as her flashlight case ( the MagLite taken from Sideshow's " Frank Black " figure ). Her Glock automatic is from BBI's Elite Force and the holster is from the Ice figure . I took her gloved hands from the spares of CG Motoko Kusanagi and the Best of CG Alternative " Harley " figure donated the sunglasses . There was a lot of extra length on the shoulder strap elastic on her back pack , so I took a buckle from a CG web belt and used the extra length to form the front attachment of the back pack harness .

It was her Destiny to become a Candy Striker

The " Destiny " Cool Girl figure is toughness pure and simple , tho' I must admit I wasn't really too keen on the orange piping on her combat suit . I did like the fact that her head was Blaze's with short cut hair ( I really like the features of the Blaze head sculpt , she looks like a hard ass Christina Applegate ) . For her transformation to Uta , Destiny got a trim ; basically just evening out the hair cut all the way around at her jawline to give her more of a " disciplined " look . Destiny's basic catsuit was perfect in that it's design mirrored the pattern of the Electra catsuit used for Heidi Pomeroy albeit in a different color scheme , black to Heidi's blue . I cut off the straps that crossed her scoop neckline . The beret is from Power Team Elite , and to remove the molded rubber sheen and give it a felt-like texture scuffed it up with sandpaper and an abrasive foam pad , which also provided a change from the dark green color to a more neutral grayish color that works really nicely . In keeping with the combat suit design established with the Heidi figure , I again transferred the A. J . McLeod kneepads to shoulder pad duty , differing only in the fact that I kept both strap attachments on the guards ( this detail was kept because the additional strap on the guards adds a bit more " weight " to the combat suit since Uta is the heavy weapons expert thus needs a heavier appearing combat suit ) . Most of Uta's gear is pretty simple kitbashing , just transferring belts , harnesses , and holsters from one figure to another , but her " signature " weaponry required a bit more customization for outfitting . I wanted to retain the sidearm holster from Destiny , since I had used the same holster from the " Ebony " figure on Heidi , however , I wanted to deviate from merely using the Mag Hammer revolver of that rig for that same reason , a sidearm pistol was suitable for Heidi as a ranking officer , but a heavy weapons tech needed a bigger sidearm , yet it still needed to fit the holster . My solution was to separate the main barrel of the Mag Hammer from the revolver grip and cut down the barrel from a Power team Elite HK . I re-attached the assault sling by way of the HK butt and pinned and glued the Mag Hammer barrel to the HK after cutting it to accomodate the fittings , this " new " Mag Hammer Submachine gun " now fit the existing holster as well as retaining a similar design look to the original Mag Hammer pistol sidearm .

The Mini Gun rig was a bit more tricky to facilitate . I had added a sling to the handle of the mini gun to help distribute the weight of the gun across Uta's shoulders when carried , but I could not very well have her running around holding the mini gun , she would need to have both hands free during ops . I needed a rack of some sort to stow the mini gun when not deployed . The obvious answer was already in place , namely the ammo case frame that held the ammunition belt on her back . The problem was devising a simple attachment system that would hold the gun in place , yet could be released with ease in a combat situation . I removed two of the folding stocks from spare SPAS shotguns ( standard Cool Girl Issues ) and cut off the long arm , leaving just the short arm and folding crook of the stock . I then drilled holes through the back pack frame and into the folding stock bars and used very tiny jewelers screws to attach the pieces . I now had two folding c-hooks on the pack frame to latch over the mini gun's barrel and hold it onto the back pack . The gun looks as good stowed as it does deployed now , making for a really seriously lethal looking tuff gal .

I Love Darren McGavin !

No doubt about it , Darren McGavin is an icon . Gaining prominence not just as " Kolchak : The Night Stalker " but by virtue of the volume of " character roles " in numerous films , he epitomizes that " everyman " with a tuff as nails inner core . He is an action hero who never was an action hero . I could never consider myself a true collector had I allowed the Reel Toys/Neco 12 inch Character Tribute figure of McGavin as he appeared in " A Christmas Story " to slip from my grasp when it was released in 2001 . Ray Santoleri's head sculpt is perfection . I was content with having Darren on display until I started customizing 12 inch action figures , after that I knew I just had to transform him into my very own " Action McGavin " . It's just my own opinion , but if you are simply content with having John Wayne only as an action figure , you are not a serious action figure maniac .

The choice to include " Darren " in the Candy Strikers will be a point I'll cover in the featurette , for the sake of the CG Collection , he's here just because he's a great subject , worthy to be included in the lineup . He is a relatively simple custom action figure . The figure base is a Volks Neo Body male , which comes sans head . I separated the McGavin head sculpt from the original static pose figure and cut down the neck and dremeled out the head to accept the post of the Neo Body neck , and the head is merely plopped over it and held in place by a tight fit . The black BDU's are from the Power Team Elite Hostage Rescue figure as is the gun belt , holster and .45 with laser sight . As the Director of Ops for the Candy Strikers , Karl Diamond needs no other accoutrement . He has the presense needed as a figurehead and commander -in-chief and that classic McGavin expression tells all too well that the burden of society weighs heavily upon him .

I absolutely love this figure , and consider it a " Classic " signature piece , he epitomizes the Gorby approach to creative endeavor .
