The Lead Heroine From " Pearls of Blood "

With the storyline of " Pearls of Blood " in development , and the character of Tesse underway on the custom bench , I needed to create an actual asian character since the plot of " Pearls " takes place in Hong Kong . After all , how can you have an eastern themed chop sockey adventure without an asian hero ? Drafted for service was the Cool Girl character tribute figure of Dynamic Planning's " Cutie Honey " , a pretty nifty looking CG with her pageboy coif colored a brilliant scarlet and sporting more asian features than other Cool Girls .

One of my quicker customs , as far as execution , but about as lengthy as creating the Warrior Maiden ; since most of the real work was done in my head as I conceived how I wanted to portray her . For the most part the stock figure of Cutie had everything I wanted for " Kumi " ; it was really just a matter of fiddling with the details . Right from the get go I wanted to use the red trenchcoat from 21st Century Toys' " Jacqueline " figure , having a great cut to it as far as capturing that " cyber punk " manga feel , and as the character of Kumi was concerned , as a " super heroine " of the " post modern " school , the overcoat serves the purpose of the capes of the " golden age " . Being a rather flashy heroine , Kumi's costume needed to reflect an image more of a pop culture rock star than that of a traditional costumed hero , so I merely unstitched and cut apart the "Honey " catsuit to form the hip huggers and halter . Her belt was taken from Kat's camo shorts , refitted with brass buckles from a Barbie hand bag and a brass eyelet cap , a brass thumbtack was used for the disk on her halter collar ; as a design note , the golden disks of Kumi's costume are representative of the " rising sun " a very important detail regarding her background . Her mask is made from the cut down mask from Barbie's " Batgirl " figure .

The shoulder guards on her trenchcoat were a last minute addition , and were added because they were needed to complete the image , I had considered making them from brass like her partner Tesse's , but having found a Megablok's Mag Warrior with shoulder armor with the right look I decided to use those in lieu of scratch building her armor . These also allowed me to incorporate a MAS ( magnetic attachment system ) like that utilized in FunToys' " Armour Core " prototype , and completed her look quite nicely .

Kumi is much more " fashion " conscious than her pal Tesse , so she also needed earrings , which are red cabochons epoxied to some gold posts . You can get a larger view of Kumi by clicking here . You can see her partner Tesse by clicking here . You can take a gander at the nemeses of the Pearls of Blood by clicking here
