Barbra Dark's Waif-like Companion

Malicia is a good example of the kind of results you can get just by playing around with the accumulated flotsam and jettison of kitbashing . Yamato's " Kelly " headsculpt was interesting in a weird manga/anime kind of way tho' I didn't think it worked that well as the face of a gun slinger . There was , however a bland and cold harshness to it which is what I found appealing , the hard part was coming up with the proper context for that face . Kelly's body was another poser , very skinny and long , quite the opposite from the curvaceous Cool Girl bodies . I sat around one day , just trying on various bits of clothing , Kelly's blouse had a rather straightforward uniform look to it which led me to put the tie from the Cy Gear Police Set on her , the image pretty much clicked . Next I tried the ruffled skirt from Fun Toys' Gothic Lolita dress and the initial thought that popped into my mind was that of an EVIL Alice in Wonderland . That image sparked that tiny ember of inspiration in my mind and soon erupted into the flame for the companion of " Dark Babylon's " occult sleuth Barbra Dark . Now initially when one thinks of a prim and proper " private school " type character it would seem natural to give her saddle shoes or some type of dress shoe , to complete that formal image . I considered however , that " Malicia " needed to be just a bit off-kilter from that traditional image and since I had the running shoes from a " Ken " accessory pack I gave them a shot . The fact that they are too large and very inappropriate for a proper school girl pretty much finalized the concept of Malicia , who in the context of " Dark Babylon's " storyline is not what she appears . I also ended up replacing Kelly's body with a Volks NEO EB-Body which still had that skinny manga style to it but was far more articulated .This is another kitbash that I am particularly fond of .

Anna Yuri from Ultra Seven

Having grown up with the original " Ultraman " , at least the original version that was released here in the US , this was a figure I had to get . I was a big fan of the " Science Patrol " from Ultraman and absolutely loved the girlish and silly character of Fugi from that series . Regardless of the fact that Anna is from a completely different Ultraman series as well as being a series I have never seen the costuming and look of the character is close enough to the original Fugi to bring back the nostalgia . There is an Akiko Fugi Cool Girl Character Tribute figure , but I have yet to see it offered anywhere . I picked this figure up from Action Figure 2002 shortly after its release and am very glad I did . This figure has been discontinued and is very rare .

This is another one of the prime examples of doll clothing that is above and beyond what we have come to expect from toy manufacturers in the United States . The level of detail and proper fabric choice for the scale is perfect , on the level of costuming you would typically see on a collector doll that is 1/3 scale . As a special note , Anna's wrist communicator actually opens and is complete with a miniature screen and keypad , that AREN'T stickers !!

My Most Expensive Custom , By Crom!

My sword maiden , Estra La , amply displays the outrageous lengths I can compulsively obsess for one of my customs . She is still a " work in progress " though she is nearing completion , the kind of money I'm dropping for this figure is the primary reason she has not yet reached that " finished " mark , I'm still saving up for the final accoutrements . The major factor in the cost for this particular custom job is her chain mail armor . Originally my intention was to build it myself , but after a day long session of joining links I realized I did not have the level of patience , nor skill to pull it off . My saving grace was the discovery of chain mail jewelry at both Sears and J C Penney , 2 sets of necklaces and earrings . It took me a month and a half to save up the money for them and I lived in constant fear that someone would buy them out from under me in the meantime . When you're dealing with jewelry for costuming you need to take special care when tearing it apart and fitting it to your figure , cuz if you muck it up , there goes that money right down the crapper . For most of my simple hand builds , I'll just fit it and eyeball it , in the case of this figure I actually measured everything to insure there would be no mistakes .

Estra La has finally been completed , after about 6 months of work . I will probably end up doing a bit more finishing tweaks , but as a whole I consider her done . You can check out the finished custom at The Warrior Maiden Gallery .
