The Second AC Comics Custom Action Figure !

My Very First Repaint

One of the things you notice as you surf thru the various websites of action figure customizers , is that the faces of their custom works are often repainted versions of stock figures . I've not felt the need to do any repaints on any of my custom kitbashes because the paint jobs on the Cool Girl figures are so nice , how could I improve on perfection ?

I did , however , feel the need to try my hand at repainting one of the face paints of my 12 inch girls , and as it happens , Twilight Magic Works '
Bounty Hunter Hannah , was a figure in my collection that I thought could work well as my initial practice dummy .

Just How The Heck Do You Do This !?!

I've read thru a great many " how to's " when it comes to executing a repaint on a stock figure and I've painted a great many faces over the past 20 odd years of hobbying and illustrating professionally , so I was not very intimidated by the prospect . My main interest in undertaking this repaint was to see if I could achieve a result that was prettier than Hannah's stock paint job and if I could hand paint a face that would stand up next to one of my Cool Girls .

The biggest obstacles I faced was that I had never painted a rubber head before and I really didn't have the proper brushes necessary ( I was using a "0" and I really should have been using a "000" or smaller . It really didn't matter tho' , I was just practicing anyway .

Just as I had learned from my various researches , a non-acetone nail polish remover took off the original paint job quite nicely . That accomplished I was left with a blank head sculpt awaiting a new application of paint .

The repaint took very little time at all , and as I went about it , I decided to experiment along the way . I had not read anywhere concerning the use of colored pencils when doing a repaint , but having used colored pencils as well as pastels for subtle shading in some of my airbrush and watercolor paintings I figured that in theory , colored pencils should work as well on a plastic head . The reason I thought this was due to the fact that colored pencils are composed of wax that is infused with pigment and certainly should adhere nicely to the rubber . I used two different brands of colored pencils , Berol Prismacolor which uses a softer wax in the composition of their colored pencils and Eagle Verithins which are of a harder consistency ( thus better for crisp detailing ) . The Eagle Verithin Burnt Sienna was used to enhance the shading around the eye lid and the fold of the upper eye lid as well as the nose details . The softer Berol Prismacolor Blush was used around the eyes and the bridge of the nose to add a bit of defining color while remaining quite soft and subtle .

The eyebrows and eyelashes were done in stages , and I used a combination of mixed brown acrylic craft paint and pre-mixed brown Airtex airbrush paint applied slowly and carefully in several layers to build up the intensity of the color . This was done primarily because I was using too large of a brush and needed to be extremely light in the application of the brush so as not to make the lashes or brows too thick . I stayed away from using black to insure a softer more natural look to the eyes . Black was only used in the painting of the pupil .

AHHHHH, my CG Body Version 2.0 arrives Just in Time !

Not long after completing the repaint , an eBay purchase of a Version 2.0 Cool Girl body came in the mail box . I had originally purchased this body to begin work on my She-Cat custom , but with the new repainted head , which turned out far better than I had really expected , I decided to put the head on this body . Momentarily I thought that this could become Nightveil , but Hannah's face just isn't Nightveil's , the lips are too thin . However , with the bangs , she could definitely work as Buckaroo Betty , another character from AC Comics' Femforce comic book .

It hurt not at all that I have a particular fondness for "Bucks" , and western themed good girls . Plus , Buckaroo Betty has recently returned to the Femforce title in issue #132 , and the cover art painted by Ed Coutts was a costume I could easily replicate with clothing and accoutrements that I had in my " box 'o goodies " .

I quickly threw together a rough sketch version of Buckaroo Betty to see how she'd look , and I was pleased . Betty , as she appears here , is still the " work in progress " . I've purchased another pair of brown cowboy boots like those worn by Wild Rose " Doc " to replace these stiff looking Ken doll boots along with a new set of dungarees that are much more form fitting that the Ken doll denims she is now wearing . I will probably also alter her stock Hannah blouse to show more cleavage . I also trimmed her hair a bit , squaring off the front portion of her main tresses and shortening them to just a bit past the shoulders , done mainly to add a bit of layering to her coif and give her a bit more style .

She is carrying one of the Toysmith's pistols and I have recently ordered one of Stevo's gunslinger rigs to replace the ultra-lame Twilight Magic gunbelt she now wears . Hey , if you're making a western themed action figure you've got to have one of the Toysmith's rigs , settle for nothing less , they are museum quality and make the figure . If by some strange chance you are unfamiliar with the work of the Toysmith , I recommend you take a visit to his website . . . Travel to the Forge of The Toysmith!

Betty's New Duds!

I was able to purchase a really nice set of dungarees from The Old Joe Infirmary , to replace the ill fitting Ken jeans that made Bett's legs look so thick and stumpy . They were part of a set that also included a jeans jacket which is of superior workmanship . OJI is an excellent source for customizers , having a large assortment of loose items and they have a nice selection of replacement feet suitable for Cool Girls too ! All Bucks needs now is her Tin Star and a brown hat to replace this ornery black one . Her new boots are from Bounty Hunter Hannah , another purchase from OJI .

Buckaroo Betty Gets Metal From The Toysmith!!

I purchased this rig from the Toysmith because it bore a striking resemblance to the rig worn by Betty in Ed Coulter's cover painting . The stag antler hand grip is a really nice touch and once again the Toysmith has outdone his typical high calibre work by utilizing even thinner hide for his leather rigs along with adding stitching detail . If I've said it once , I'll say it again ; if you are creating a western custom figure , it deserves one of his 1/6th scale metal and leather masterpieces . In my opinion , this rig really makes this figure shine .
