So You Want Body Armor For Your 1:6 Action Figure ?

This tutorial is focused on creating a sturdy , durable set of body armor for your 12 inch action figure using Kneadatite , a resin based putty that has a consistancy like plastic when cured . It is a rather laborious method , compared to using a polymer clay , but the end result is lighter and far more resilient to stress than a polymer clay and will yield a finished product that will withstand the test of time .

Better still is the fact that the cured pieces will posess a degree of flexibility that mimics PVC , and can be drilled , sanded , painted and take detail of the finest degree . Depending on your needs , the kneadatite can also be used to prototype and molds can be made , thus allowing you to produce multiple copies of your armor if you desire .

Creating The Base

Depending on the style and type of armor you wish to create , there are several methods that you can employ when using Kneadatite . For this particular armor design , I wanted the body to be form fitting , so I am sculpting it right on the figure . Since there will be a body suit under the armor , that body suit is also placed on the figure to allow for a tight fit .

Kneadatite will stick to most any surface , so to insure that the bodysuit is not marred , I wrap the figure in plastic wrap . A note of Caution : The kneadatite I am using is about 10 years old , so there has occurred some drying of the resins that results in surface inconsistancies , it's not a major problem , it just means that the putty won't be as smooth in consistancy were I using fresh putty . Due to the amount of finishing work I will be doing on this set of armor , it will not be a drawback aside from requiring a wee bit more work to get the finish I want .

Cletus: The Fox Football Robot Exploded

At 10 inches tall , the Fox Sports Robot is a bit shy of 1:6 scale , and I originally passed on him . After some consideration though I decided that at his pricepoint , about $17 dollars , he was cheap enough to be worthy of customizing experimentation .

I found that he can be quite easily broken down simply by immersing him in hot water , and after achieving the proper amount of pliability pulled apart at all the major joints . The action figure as a whole seems quite ripe for a variety of custom possibilities . I have already used kneadatite to begin elongating his thighs . The wrist joints are sized in a manner to easily allow swapping with BBi " Perfect Body " hands as well as Soldier Story hands . Takara " Cool Girl " hands can work with some slight modification ( deepening ) of the wrist post hole .

Refining The Custom Process

Curious to see how the legs would work were I to substitute the stock thighs and hips with more feminine anatomy I did a swap test using some Volks Neo Girl hips and thighs . I used the Volks body blank because it's easily broken down into its component parts . I was satisfied with the test .

I separated the breastplate from the hip section of one of BBi's Perfect Bodies and chopped the legs off just above the knees , and reattached the Robot's lower thigh posts to the PB's thighs . I slipped on the PB's original biker shorts and did a test fit . The PB isn't securely attached yet since at this photo the cememt is still drying , but this customization is working for me .

A Size Comparison

With her new PB hips , though not seated into the legs yet , the " too short " Fox Sports Robot body now is more comparably sized up with the rest of the RobotHunters .
