MWD December Kitbash Contest

I had not planned on creating a kitbash entry for the Men With Dolls Forum's " Holiday Edition " due to the work schedule I am subject to at my full time job managing the liquor store ( the holiday season tends to be rather harried and hectic ) , but I got inspired by all the other bashes and decided to rip one out at the last moment .

I actually began working on a female bash , but for whatever reasons , I ended up favoring my second idea , which was instigated by a tassel from a Christmas ornament and my Sideshow " Tee Hee " figure .

A Temporary Costume

The " Baba Noel " kitbash is only a temporary version , as I intend to complete this figure as a more serious arabic themed character . Once I had attached the filigreed skullcap with the " obedient one " hair lock along with the jewel bendi I knew that this was going to be a " Sindbad " sort of character , and I needed a suitable pattern for some authentic arabic styled knickers . I searched the internet and durned if I didn't find a simple pattern that was perfect . You too may find this helpful if you are in need of some arab garb ( I'll also add that this pattern could also serve nicely as samurai pants as well ! ) Check out Salwar Pattern

What Lies Ahead . . .

I used vinyl backed Christmas ribbon to add the shoulder wings to Baba's vest , inserting cord to make the rounded rim and then some polyfil to pad them out . I'll probably add some trim to decorate the vest as well as some eyelets and lacing but have not yet had the time to do that . His boots will also get some trim added . The vest itself is sewn from dollhouse carpet fabric ( which I had available though plush velvet would have been preferable ) , no biggie since it works . The salwar once completed exceeded my expectations , primarily due to the fact that I'd never sewn style specific trousers before and it was hard for me to visualize the end result as I cut and sewed via the pattern . I absolutely love the way they turned out and am just impressed as hell out of the pattern and how simple it was to follow , especially for a novice seamster such as myself .

Beginning the Serious Work on Baba

As you may have guessed , nobody makes shamshirs , scimitars or tulwars in 1:6 scale . It was therefore up to my own devices to create a suitable blade my arabic character . I've created a variety of edged weapons in my lifetime but this was the first shamshir I had ever done . The blade is full tang and cut from sheet aluminum , the crossguard is brass and the " ivory " hilt is a mix of cream and sepia sculpey . I inserted cut straight pins into the sculpey prior to boil curing to make the pegs that attach the ivory hilt to the blade .

Cheating The Crossguard

Ideally I would have liked the crossguard to be formed from a single piece of brass , but not having that option I drew out a pattern and cut the two halves from sheet brass and then dremeled and filed them to symmetry . I hammered them in order to get the curvature and glued them in place . There is a gap at the bars that extend laterally past the blade that I will fill with putty and paint gold , which should blend adequately with the real brass .

It's Time For A Scabbard

Typically shamshir scabbards were wood covered in leather , and so when it coms time to make a scabbard for Baba's shamshir , that will likely be the method I take .
