Men With Dolls November Custom Kitbash Entry

Who Sez Ninjas Can't Be Cute 'n Perky ?!?

One of the reasons I enjoy the Men With Dolls Forums' monthly kitbash contest is that it motivates me to take all the flotsam and jettison that accumulates over the years of customizing and put it to good use . It's not that it's stuff that won't be utilized eventually , which is why I keep it anyway , but that it gets my creative juices going like in the old days of professional art and deadlines and almost always results in a figure that gets to join my treasured collection of " keepers " . It also helps me expand my collection cheaply and often far better than purchasing a stock figure while at the same time forcing me to venture " outside the box " when it comes to character creation .

Good Use For Glinda's Headsculpt
I got Mattel's Barbie " Glinda The Good Witch " at the same time as their " Wicked Witch of the West " , and while getting rid of her costuming and body decided to keep her head in the event I could urilize it for something ; being that closed mouth Barbie noggins are rare . Glinda still had the stereotypical Barbie " Vacancy " in the brain paint job but I figured that at the least she would serve as a useful practice dummy for my face painting skills . I like Barbie when it comes to practice dummies , if I ruin it I don't feel the loss had it been a truly awesome headsculpt as on a CG .

As is quite typical for Barbie " Collector " series dolls , her hair was styled and varnished , but unlike most , sans her crown the hairstyle looked hideous ! I soaked her head in boiling water for about fifteen minutes and then carefully combed it out with pins and needles . It was a real improvement !

Barbie neck holes are smaller than CG or PB neckholes , and the only bods I have found that have neck posts that are thin enough to accomodate this are Ladies Mission and Volks , though I would guess Obitsus would be thin enough as well . I would imagine a Soldier Story body would function too . However I had a Perfect Body , and while the small breast plate works for Babs head placement I wanted a bustier girl . I'm not a huge fan of BBi's larger breastplate too " implant " looking , and fortunately I had a CG 1.0 version breastplate from CG Ice that I had broken apart for the sake of study . A bit of dremeling and it was altered to fit the PB body and reduced the neck post thickness enough to allow placement of the Glinda headsculpt .

Another Successsful Face Up : After Several Tries !!

I have found that I paint faces much more successfully if I draw them out beforehand , so after removing the stock face paint I printed out a couple of copies of Glinda's head without paint to draw on , basically working out the lashes , brows and lips which I then use as a guide as I apply paint . Another thing I have learned is that I paint eyelashes much better using watercolors as opposed to acrylics ( I have no idea why ! ) , they certainly are much easier to wipe off in the event of a mistake using watercolors ( and I DO make a LOT of mistakes when painting lashes ) ! Compared to previous face ups , this one went rather quickly and smoothly and I am pretty happy with the end result , she's pretty and not too empty looking . I purposely went assymetrical on her lip job , to downsize them and make them slightly smirkish and painted them quite simply , with only a single stroke for the base layer upper and lower and the same for the shading and highlighting . Not extravagant on her lips , but perfect for the look I was shooting for . Interestingly I end up painting doll heads in much the same fashion as I work when painting 2D images of girl faces . I'll probably never be able to paint a face with the level of detail and hyper realism that is attained by some of the Japanese artists out there , but that's okay , I'm happy being able to stay true to the " Gorby " style of girl art with my dollies .

Autumn's Arsenal

Autumn's unique ninja weapons were the result of not wanting to create a traditional gun-toting gal nor just another babe with a samurai sword . Her short staff sword is constructed from the blade portion of Takara's Microman Biomachine Stinger that is fastened to the toggle bar from an old desk lamp via a trimmed down hawk quill pen nib . I may still wrap the handle of the staff segment with leather . It is a two piece sectional weapon that can be broken apart but I have not yet designed a carrying case or scabbard for it .

Her chain weapon is a variation of a kusari- fundo , a small utility knife attached at one end ( a kunai ) replacing the second weighted end thus making it a kusari-kunai . The knife portion is from Microlady Ninja attached to a length of jewelry chain via an O-ring
