Sixteen Years is Too Long . . .

If collecting action figures as a hobby has a downside, it has to be those missed opportunities. When I first started reading the comic book , I was involved in collecting anything and everything I could find of the Dirty Pair . When I first found the Appleseed vinyl kits it was at the same time that I found the Dirty Pair vinyl kits , and unfortunately I could not afford both . The Lovely Angels won out , being my first love , and since that time I have eagerly awaited the opportunity to present itself where I could at long last add Deunan and Briareos to my collection .

Of course , now I'm involved in collecting Takara's " Cool Girls " so once again Applessed has gotten kind of the " bum's rush " . Lucky for me I'm a bit more financially empowered than I was 16 years ago , so when I caught a glimpse of the form of Briareos as part of the Special Collectors' Edition of the 2004 " Appleseed " movie , I quickly snatched at this long anticipated acquisition . I searched to see if any of the DVD cases contained Deunan , none did , which means either they were sold out or they never released a version like that ( the marketing team must be idiots not to realize they can sell twice as many DVD's simply by people buying 2 just to get both figures ! ) Then again , they may be geniuses , realizing that we hardcore fans will then go searching fanatically for the Deunan figure , and pay out the wah-zoo to get it . Cursed Marketing People!!
Sorta Appleseed , Sorta Not Appleseed

I have mixed feelings on these action figures . To a certain degree I am unhappy that they are NOT the Briareos and Deunan that Masamune Shirow made me fall in love with ; for that I need to seek out the original vinyl kits . Like I need two more 1/4 scale figures in my small apartment! They are indeed though , exquisite versions of the Deunan and Briareos that are portrayed in the feature film , Briareos adhering more closely to the Masamune established imagery moreso than fair Deunan , but these are mere quibbles for " purists " than any real criticisms of the figures . or the film . They do retain enough " Shirow-esqueness " to be immediately recognizeable , and I'm very pleased about that . One can see the Masamune influence in the armor and weapons , even the paint jobs , and it is this essence that's really what I , as a collector , wants in my tribute figures . It would be difficult to truly capture Masamune's style in a production piece , those that have made honest attempts fall short of the goal just because it's not Shirow doing the work , it's someone trying to be Shirow . It typically does not work .
Pick Up That Gun Soldier ! . . . Uh , pick up your ARM First !!

The sculpts on these figures are great , the level of detail is well defined and crisp . The paint jobs are extremely well done and visually speaking both figures really compliment each other . The designs are bang on the film versions and the film versions have strayed but a little as far as maintaining that distinctinive Masamune styling as regards armor and weaponry . Both Briareos " Cyborg Killer " and Deunan's assault rifle are finely crafted and both possess removeable ammo clips , Briareos' rifle even sports a flip up scope cover . The articulation of both figures is high enough to allow a good variety of poses , all of which enhance that Masamune Shirow imagery from the original manga . Both figures have their faults , Briareos tends to have that dreaded affliction of " Arm Droppsie " and Deunan could probably aim better if she were able to actually hold her weapons , both of these infirmities can be remedied with the requisite amount of fudging around during posing sessions .

Taken as a whole though , these figures are excellent and more than worthwhile additions to an action figure collection , and definitely deserve a diorama base to display upon .

Yamato Toys has a rather diverse selection of Applelseed action figures tied in with the release of the motion picture , most of which are now extremely difficult to obtain . If you find one , it is highly recommended that you buy it , it'll only get harder and more expensive to acquire these as time goes by . Interested in the film ?
